Boxing in Thailand. Muay Thai training in Thailand: what you need to know

This section is based on five years of observations of the training of famous Thai boxers in Thailand camps. Here is a generalized analysis of the training of leading Muay Thai masters.
Thai boxers train in special camps, of which there are about two thousand in Bangkok alone. The camp is a small complex consisting of an area under a canopy directly for training, rooms where the boxers live, and often the manager’s house.
Each camp has from one to four rings, 2-6 bulk bags, bulk and pneumatic bags, and stretch balls. By American and European standards, the camps look rather poor, but there are sufficient quantities of boxing gloves, masks, and paws. There are usually 12-18 boxers training in the camp, with 1-3 coaches and 5-6 assistants. Thus, the classes outwardly look like group classes, but in reality there is constant individual work with each athlete. Boxers get up at 6 o'clock in the morning, have breakfast, and at 9 o'clock the first training begins. A large amount of this training time is spent, as they say in boxing, “working on the road.” While working on the road, a boxer usually runs 5-8 kilometers at varying intensity. Despite the hot climate, boxers run around dressed in tracksuits. This is followed by short work on the paws and bag.
In some camps, boxers start training at 6 am. Jogging, shadowboxing and some special exercises last up to 7 hours.
The second training starts at 3 pm. Boxers usually do a jog that lasts 15-30 minutes. Training at the camp begins with jumping rope or on truck tires. 10-15 minutes are allotted for jumping. What follows is shadowboxing. It is carried out in a unique way, unusual for athletes involved in ordinary English boxing. Boxers move in a free area at a low pace and deliver various punches rather sluggishly. By the way, the boxers training right there, performing according to the rules of English boxing, conduct the usual shadow boxing in the ring, imagining an imaginary opponent. Shadowboxing lasts 3 rounds of 3-4 minutes.
Then the technique begins to be practiced on the paws. When working with pads, the trainer or assistant simulates various strikes, forcing the boxer to use different defenses and counterattacks. Paw work lasts 3-4 rounds.
Usually three times a week there are practice fights in training. During them, boxers are used only. Athletes box with 12-16 ounce gloves and very closed masks. The training fight is going on in full force, because if a boxer does not spar at full strength, he, according to the Thais, will have. A training fight usually lasts 2-4 rounds.
After mitt work or combat training, bag work lasts 3 to 5 rounds. Boxers use other equipment (punching bags, stretch balls, wall pillows) individually and in a small volume.
When working in pairs, which usually lasts 2 rounds, boxers easily strike, often with their legs, which are not protected at all by protectors. The essence of such a fight is to use the correct defense and carry out a counterattack. The more variety and originality in the actions used, the better. The last 2-4 rounds of training are devoted to clinch fighting. Boxers easily throw knee strikes at each other, the main focus is on throwing the partner off balance, using the best grips, and striking with knees at a time when the partner is not ready to defend himself.
The training ends with exercises to develop the neck and abdominal muscles.
In between rounds, boxers drink clean water to regulate the water-salt regime and restore the boxer’s strength to a certain extent. Trainings are carried out within the boundaries of their weight category. because a boxer, finding himself in the conditions of a competitive fight, calmly withstands high loads.
*Weight loss has a negative effect on the body's performance.
Thus, this article examines five years of observation of the training of famous Thai boxers from leading Muay Thai camps in Thailand. Despite the insufficient equipment of the gyms and financing only at its own expense, Thailand remains the mecca of world Muay Thai and the leader of Thai boxing throughout the world.

Among the numerous tourists in Thailand, a new layer is becoming more and more noticeable - people who specifically come to Thailand not in search of attractions and typical exotica, but for serious training in Thai boxing (Muay Thai) . This is reminiscent of the time when many teenagers in Russia, having watched enough videos with Van Damme and, dreamed of going to Shaolin to train. Now such ideas are quite feasible. Many famous and not so famous schools Thai boxing Muay Thai Phuket, Pattaya and Chang Mai offer unlimited stays for foreigners with training at their training camps.

Choosing a Muay Thai School

In the photo: Thai boxing, in the training room

To get the best results in Muay Thai, foreigners need to choose the right muay thai school. Price is not the determining factor in this matter. Much more important is the presence of attentive instructors and the correct setting of training goals.

In the photo: Thai boxing, practicing techniques Muay Thai with an instructor

Usually in Muay Thai camps training takes place twice a day. The training program includes a lot of running, strength training, sparring and bag work. Therefore, in order not to die at the very first Thai boxing lesson, it is important to correctly determine your initial level.

Muay Thai training cost

In the photo: Thai boxing, in groups

Monthly price Muay Thai training course can range from 5 to 15 thousand baht. It depends on the number of trainers, the location of the camp, the density and severity of the training. Muay Thai schools are often required to enter their fighters into certain Muay Thai competitions. If a beginner maintains such conditions, this will also affect the price of the Muay Thai training course.

Don't rush to pay the full amount for the month. If you stop practicing Muay Thai due to an injury, there is a chance that your money will stay at the school :) In many Muay Thai schools you can take one-time trial day training sessions (price 300-500 baht).

Find out in advance about the prices for the purchase or rental of sports equipment: gloves, paws, protective belts, pads, etc. - these amounts will also be added to the total costs.

Accommodation of athletes in the Muay Thai camp

In the photo: temporary accommodation muay thai training

As a rule, Muay Thai training camps are located on the outskirts of towns and cities and have their own housing. The cost of living in the camp is calculated separately and can reach 2-3 thousand baht per month. Meals are usually included in the price of a basic Muay Thai course.

In the photo: Thai boxing, Working with bags

In good Muay Thai schools, beginners should not be left to their own devices. The usual practice is for one instructor to lead a group of 2-3 students. It is advisable to find a Muay Thai school whose instructors:

1. They are the speakers themselves. Muay Thai fighters with a certain track record.
2. Can communicate on English language, – otherwise the risk of overtraining or injury increases.

Is it possible to earn money by competing in Muay Thai competitions?

In the photo: Thai boxing, fights Muay Thai

Many foreigners, having achieved some success in Muay Thai, are eager to compete in Muay Thai competitions. With some luck and preparation, athletes can certainly earn money by participating in Muay Thai fights. The earnings of fighters, depending on the rank of the competition, experience and affiliation with certain schools, range from 4 to 25 thousand baht. However Muay Thai fights are extremely dangerous, so beginners in Muay Thai should not count on competitions as a serious source of income for at least a couple of years. Well, of course, a good one is required, which has the option “ active species sport".

Friends, I’m glad to see you all again on my blog! Finally I got around to posting a report about my visit to Thailand, Koh Samui. This trip was non-standard for me: I gave myself a kind of challenge and went to study at a Thai boxing school.

I make many decisions based on the “here and now” principle, and this was no exception - the decision was made in one day. Looking ahead, I’ll say that it was painful in places :) Especially considering that I had never practiced Muay Thai before. But this trip really gave me valuable life experience and my views changed in many ways. This report is a continuation of the series of photo and video reports of my

In addition to the photo report, I also recorded 2 videos:

Review of Thailand, where I share my experience in the country and give practical advice. The video is about 30 minutes long, but I recommend stocking up on popcorn and watching it to the end - especially if you've never been to Thailand but are planning on visiting!

A short video review of my home, where I lived for a month.

Well, below I present to your attention a photo report - Thailand through the eyes not of a tourist, but of a savage :)
To begin with, the island of Koh Samui itself, I lived 10 minutes from Chaweng Beach:

If you come to Koh Samui by ferry, then the first thing you see at Nathon Pier is a bunch of minibuses that are ready to take you to any part of the island, as well as prepared pickup trucks for excursions:

I took a photo of the price tags - in case you get ready (the exchange rate at the time of the article is 1 baht = 1.7 rubles)

Upon arrival, I immediately went to the Thai boxing school, where I was greeted very friendly :)

The next day was Sunday and there were no training sessions that day, so we decided to devote this day to a trip around the island:

Along the way we stopped to visit friends :)

Well, in the evening there was a truly masterful dinner - a bowl of Tom Yam soup and a bowl of rice :) By the way, throughout the whole month my diet was approximately the same, which allowed me to lose extra pounds...

Well, then workdays began: 2 training sessions a day (1 training session at 8.00 in the morning, the second at 16.00 in the evening), 6 days a week. The first 2 weeks I quietly crawled to my house and I simply passed out - even during the day I tried to snatch at least a couple of hours to sleep. Then I more or less got into it, but I barely had enough strength to push myself until the end of the second training session...

Well, this is my friend Mark from sunny Zimbabwe, who trained with me at school. Since he spoke only English, and only I had fluent English at school, he and I quickly found a common language - for me it was an extra month of practice! Mark has some kind of business in his homeland, which also allows him to have passive income, so he has been traveling around Asia for 3 years, playing sports and living for his own pleasure!

After training, we often went to the market to buy fruit and prepared various cocktails - of course, both the taste and the cost of fruit in Thailand are completely different... The only thing that bothered me was the bananas - they are very similar to the facehugger from the movie "Aliens" :)

Actually, since I didn't have a kitchen, I ate at local cafe, but in the camp there were guys who lived in a house without any amenities and they cooked on a grill or boiled breasts in a kettle (this is what I understand - downshifting!) Several times we went to another market (for locals) and bought fish and greens there :

Crimean onion - feel at home :)

In the mornings, almost every day, I was greeted by this furry miracle on the porch:

And this is the neighborhood where I lived:

In general, Thailand is a country of contrasts:
You can just walk down the street and suddenly bump into a Husky - who would have thought of bringing her to Tai?

About 2 weeks later we went to the beach to sunbathe on our day off and then I (attention!) drank one bottle of 0.33 beer! By the way, during my entire month-long stay I allowed myself 7 bottles, 3 of which I drank on New Year's Day!

So I passed by this department, but sometimes I sighed internally :)

By the way, speaking of alcohol: in Thailand you can find almost everything you want! I came across Jack Daniels, immediately remembered Max Vipreferal, Max - a personal photo for you :)

Throughout the month, my workplace looked like this:

About a couple of weeks into my stay, it started to rain and everything started to flood and wash away a little:

One day the bridge simply washed away and I had to take a detour to get to school:

In the video, I said that once on the road I met such a beautiful scorpion, here he is in person:

And after jogging along the beach, I went to a cafe to have breakfast and met another friend: he hissed terribly, maybe this is how they express sympathy?

As I already said in the video (and may the bikers forgive me), I believe that everything between my legs is not transport, so I rented a Toyota Yaris, which faithfully drove me around the island and allowed me to move around comfortably time of heavy rains. At this moment I especially felt sorry for the people on mopeds.

By the way, regarding mopeds: I argued with one person who lives there with his wife that a bike is much more dangerous than a car (an eternal topic of argument). To which I was told that this was all my fear of the bike and my prejudices. Literally 2 days later he called me and asked me to tell him the date of my departure so that he could rent the car that I drove. In response to my question “what happened,” he sent me these photos. And it was his wife who fell successfully, without fractures or concussions... Reason: her wheel hit the gravel on the road and did not have time to react. Do you still want to ride a moped in Thailand?

In general, safety is a priority for Thais, as can be seen from the photo below. Well, it’s okay - if these fall out, we’ll get some more :)

Somewhere after a week of incessant rains, the Muay Thai school was completely flooded and we decided to just go to the gym - fortunately it was on a mountain and the water didn’t reach it!

We accidentally found a road cafe and almost every day, after classes, we went there for dinner. 5 chicken kebabs and a bowl of rice cost me 1.5 dollars! I have never eaten such delicious chicken anywhere else!

One day I came to run on the beach and it turned out that on that day all of Europe celebrated Christmas! And they also say that Russians start drinking early on vacation!

By the way, I usually ended my run like this:

At the end of December, two of my sports motivators decided to go to Vietnam - work there is easier. By the way, the guys left Ukraine as soon as the events on the Maidan began and never returned. I will definitely meet them again somewhere in our vast world!

The New Year passed smoothly, without fanaticism: at 3 o’clock in the morning I was already at home, but the next day I woke up with an almost crystal clear head and went to the beach for breakfast :)

Since it rained almost every day, my friend Mark and I kept postponing a trip around the island, but since he was soon going to leave for Phuket, we still chose a relatively rainy day and decided to go around the entire island:

We climbed into the mountains, where, as they say, it opened beautiful view, but the fog ruined everything...

If I were planning to return to Koh Samui, I would definitely rent one of these houses on the mountain - the view is simply gorgeous!

It's time to say goodbye to my friend - the Aryan Mark, a lover of big Thai women :) By the way, we periodically write to him, he is still in Thailand, now preparing for Muay Thai performances.

I still had about 12 days left on the island, so I continued to get in shape. One day I went jogging to the beach in the morning and my flip-flops and T-shirt were stolen (no, they call it changing the owner). But this did not spoil my mood and I drove home, singing “hands up” songs and then the police paid attention to me:

They stopped me and asked if I was okay. I said that everything was fine, but only on the beach my things were stolen. The policeman smiled and said exactly as I wrote - they just changed the owner :). wished me have a nice rest and I moved on. They didn’t ask for any documents, they didn’t even get my license!

The last day of departure has arrived. I decided to have a farewell dinner at Geko Bar (the place where I filmed my first video). This has become my favorite place on the island. Those of you who come to this island simply must visit it!

The latest freshly caught fish - purchased and cooked to order...

And the final photo with the coach who honestly pushed me all this month :)

This is how exciting the journey turned out to be. Of course, the weather spoiled the impression, but I went there to play sports, so to some extent the weather even helped me not to be distracted by anything :) I decided for myself that I would definitely return to Thailand to live, but it would definitely be Phuket. By the way, there is one of the most popular Thai boxing schools - Tiger: this is a whole camp with nine rings, a gym, meals, etc. So next time I plan to go there.
I organized this trip exclusively with the money I earned from investing on the Internet (it was my fundamental decision to “feel” this money). By the way, I provide extensive consultations on all issues related to investing on the Internet! You can contact me in any way convenient for you. My contacts can be found

You can also independently study the composition of my investment portfolio. Up-to-date information on it is always available to you

Happy investing everyone!

Thailand is known throughout the world as the birthplace of one of the most brutal martial arts. For people from poor families, Muay Thai championships remain the only way out of poverty. There is a belief among the farangs that Thais are already born martial artists, and therefore it is better to avoid conflicts with them. But some of our compatriots smash such speculations to smithereens in the ring

For those who don't mind a broken nose or cracked ribs, here's our guide to Pattaya's martial arts classes.

Alexey Likhachev, participant in the sensational story of a failed robbery

“I asked a girl out on a date. Let's go sit by the sea and chat. I grabbed everything I needed - grapes and a bottle of Jack from the freezer. We arrived, went to the stone cape, laid out a blanket, lit candles. We drink whiskey, eat grapes - romance! I started looking for suitable music on my phone, when suddenly a young Cambodian man appeared out of nowhere and smashed a bottle on my head. I remember Katya’s scream through the colored kaleidoscope in my head. Here - thanks to our MMA coach Andrey Korneev - my hands themselves found where to hit. I calmed down the first one immediately, the second one tried to throw me off the rocks into the sea - unfortunately, my blows were not so accurate with him. It’s not clear where the police came from: they were probably sitting in ambush and “catching with live bait.” As a result, one Cambodian robber was detained, the rest managed to escape, and I became the hero of the news.”

Mixfight Pattaya

The head coach of the club - the thunderstorm of robbers Andrei Mikhailovich Korneev - has 7th dan in combat karate, 5th dan in thai kickboxing and 3rd dan in kempo karate. Andrey Mikhailovich’s coaching experience is more than 20 years.

There are several Muay Thai style Thai boxing schools in Phuket. Most of them are “tourist”, that is, they were initially designed to serve tourists. There is nothing good or bad about this. It just is. This fact has a number of certain advantages - in such schools, coaches are already accustomed to working with foreign tourists and speak at least some English. And believe me, even a few dozen familiar phrases will help you master the necessary technique more successfully.

Such schools are primarily suitable for those who are not entirely confident in their Muay Thai technique, even if they have been training in their home country for several years. Many, having arrived in Phuket and started classes at one of the schools, are very surprised to discover that what they were doing before has nothing to do with Muay Thai.

To choose for yourself the best school, it’s best to go around them all and attend one or two training sessions. And then stop at one specific one. First of all, pay attention to the number of people training with one trainer (1-2 people per trainer is normal). Then you must evaluate the quantity and especially the quality of the attention given to you personally, the location of the school relative to beaches, restaurants and other things. Well, not the last condition is the opportunity to rent housing somewhere near the school.

IN resort town Kata there is a Muay Thai camp - J Prapa. It is located on the road closest to the beach, just behind the bike parking lot. It’s a bit difficult to find it the first time, but you can see the diagram - www.katamuaythai.ewebsite.com. Once upon a time, a very famous champion in Thailand conducted training in this camp, but now there is another coach there, by the way, also a very good one. The advantages of this camp also include its convenient location and the availability of the necessary equipment for sparring. If you are missing something, you can buy it at the store located on the camp grounds. Among the disadvantages are the lack of the required number of trainers (one trainer is not able to pay enough attention to all students) and the lack of simulators.

Another camp - Chang Muay Thai Gym is located on Kata Beach. You can find it using the diagram - http://www.changmuaythai.com. The advantages include the location in the very popular resort town of Kata, the proximity of inexpensive housing options, and the availability of equipment. The disadvantages include a feeling of neglect in the gym itself, high prices for training, lack of exercise equipment and a normal store. There is practically nothing you can buy from what is available there. And there is also a very unpleasant smell from a nearby cafe, which is very annoying during training.

The next camp - Raw Fitness is located in the Nai Harn resort, which is very popular Russian tourists behind relaxing holiday without unnecessary fuss. The hall in the camp is small and operates under the motto: “relax and train.” You can find this camp using the map - http://www.phuketcleanse.com/muay-thai-fitness. The advantages include a convenient location, the availability of fitness training, a good rocking chair and the presence of a shower room. Disadvantages - the training is not very serious, there is practically nothing for real athletes to do here, the gym is small and there are few coaches.

Dragon Muay Thai, located in the northern part of Chalong, is still considered the best gym for Muay Thai in Phuket. It is located on the same street as Camp Tiger. The distance between them is approximately 200 meters. Find a camp - muaythaidragon.com. Pros: very friendly trainers with an excellent attitude towards athletes, two gyms and a pleasant Thai atmosphere in each, the store sells inexpensive equipment, equipment for training is available. The only downside is that the location of the hall is not very convenient.

Tiger Camp is located near Dragon Muay Thai. If you search separately, you can use the map - www.tigermuaythai.com. This camp has a very big square and well thought out organization. The advantages include: decent training, large staff trainers, large gyms, availability of equipment, a good rocking chair equipped with air conditioning, for those who wish, there are training sessions in other sports. There are few disadvantages, and even then they can be called relative - the location is not very convenient if you live in a tourist area and the incredibly large area of the camp, in which you can get lost at first.

Rawai is a Thai boxing gym located in the town of the same name on the island of Phuket. It is located on the outskirts of the northern part of the city. It is difficult to find, so it is better to use the map - www.rawaimuaythai.com. The advantages of the camp are a large staff of trainers, some of whom are active fighters, a good gym with spacious rings, the opportunity to rent housing right in the camp, good rocking, yoga classes. The downsides are the lack of clinch and sparring, the trainers don’t pay much attention to what you’re doing and also – it’s very inconvenient to get here from the resort areas.

Another camp – Lion is located near Nai Beach Harn and near the Sinbi Muay Thai camp. The gym is run by a Briton, which does not in any way affect the quality of the training. Pros - a spacious and bright hall in good condition and with good equipment, availability of equipment and intensive training, the possibility of accommodation on the camp site and proximity to the beach, the best price-quality ratio throughout the island of Phuket. The disadvantages include the fact that not all coaches are equally attentive to their players, and parking is not very convenient even for bikes, not to mention cars.

The last of the famous ones - the Phuket Muay Thai camp is located in the Chalong area of the city in the area of \u200b\u200b"villages" of houses for rent. It’s better to find it on the map - http://phuketmuaythai.com/. The advantages are the presence of a rocking chair, in which, by agreement with the trainer, you can exercise in the evenings for free, and the proximity of housing, if you rent it right here. By the way, the houses here are quite good according to reviews. Disadvantages - insufficient number of trainers and inattentive attitude on their part towards the trainees, lack of rounds and normal discipline in training, lack of necessary equipment, not very convenient location, if you don’t live in the neighborhood.
