In 2019, smoking was banned on 20 beaches in Thailand. These included the beaches of Pattaya. Violation of the ban is subject to a fine of THB 100,000 (approximately $3,000) or imprisonment for up to one year. The smoking ban is being introduced to protect the environment and keep beaches clean. The reason for introducing the ban was research conducted on Patong Beach on the island of Phuket. It is estimated that there are between 63,000 and 138,000 cigarette butts along the 2.5-kilometre beach.
There are plans to designate special smoking areas for smokers, but so far there are no warning signs or designated areas.
Pattaya beaches
The entire coastline along which Pattaya stretches consists of sandy beaches. Therefore, if you choose to live in any area of the city in the coastal zone, you will always be close to the beach. But when choosing an apartment or hotel, you have to take into account that the beaches vary greatly in their cleanliness.
When I say cleanliness, I don’t mean the clarity of the water; it’s muddy everywhere because of the muddy bottom. The main problem is the garbage that floats in the water. This can be various packaging, leftover food, bags, cigarette butts and other indecent things. Some of them, the name of which you don’t even want to pronounce, slowly floating past, forever discourage the desire to enter the water in this place.
When choosing a beach, the rule is that the further the beach is from the city center, the cleaner it is. By center we mean the place in the city where the famous Pattaya Walking Street is located.
Pattaya Beach
The central beach of Pattaya, about 4 km long, which stretches in an arc from the beginning of Walking Street to the north, is called Pattaya Beach.
This is the main party place. There are many merchants walking along the beach selling everything. You can find groups of Thais having picnics along the shore, especially in the evening. Locals come here to watch the sunset. It is always very crowded here, there are many local children, but there are very few swimmers, since Pattaya Beach is the dirtiest beach in Pattaya. Trees are planted along the beach, followed by a wide alley with rows of palm trees on both sides. There is a busy highway right behind the alley, which also adversely affects cleanliness.
Cozy Beach
South of Pattaya Beach, behind the cape, there is a small beach called Cozy Beach, adjacent to the Pratumnak area. The beach is surrounded by a hill with a sheer cliff, so to get to it you have to go down a steep staircase. But at the top there are many cafes and a magnificent view of the water surface of the sea and the island in it.
Cozy Beach is located quite far from public transport routes, so it is not very popular and not so crowded. The beach has all the necessary infrastructure, but prices in the cafe are a little higher.
The length of the beach is approximately 650 m, the sand here is cleaner than on Pattaya Beach, but there is also garbage in the water. In the southwestern part of the beach there are many boats and boats and there is a storm sewer through which various debris falls into the sea, especially during rains. It looks like a wide, stinking stream, and once you have been near it, you are afraid to take water treatments on this beach.
To the south, a private area adjoins the shore, behind which is the next beach - Pratamnak.
Pratumnak Beach
The 5th street of the Pattaya district of the same name opens onto Pratumnak Beach. To the right of this street there are stones and debris on the beach and in the water; on the left the shore is sandy and well-groomed. The length of the beach is 550 meters.
In the water, you can often stumble upon all sorts of debris that washes ashore by the wind. There are expensive hotels adjacent to the beach, so the crowd here is mostly calm and respectable. For the same reason, prices in cafes are slightly higher. There is free Wi-Fi on the beach.
There are many trees along the shore, in the shade of which there are sun loungers. It is not convenient to swim on the beach with children, since the depth begins immediately, at a distance of 2-3 meters from the shore, although at low tide the entry into the water is smoother.
Dongtan Beach
There is no clear boundary of Dongtan Beach from the south. On the ground, it merges with Jomtien Beach, forming a single sandy coastline. But there is still a difference and it lies not in the features of the relief, but in its Orientation.
In Thailand, it is popular as the main gay beach in Pattaya. There are always a lot of LGBT tourists from all over the world here. The path of sex tourism for gay visitors has been trodden right here.
The gay party zone begins behind the Jomtien police stronghold, which many consider to be a border pillar separating two beaches - Dongtan and Jomtien. But these features are not striking and the beach is quite suitable for a family holiday. The entrance to the water is shallow, so it is shallow near the shore, which is convenient for families with small children.
The water is much cleaner than on the central beach, but not ideal. There is no busy highway nearby, and the narrow street that runs along the shore is closed to car traffic during the day. The beach is clean and well maintained. A pedestrian zone stretches along the shore, behind which tall trees are planted, and a palm grove grows on the border with Jomtien. There are many massage parlors and cafes in the shade of trees.
An important advantage of the beach is that it is located in relative proximity to the city center, where the main entertainment of Pattaya is concentrated and the nightlife is in full swing.
Jomtien Beach.
This beach is suitable for those who prefer cleanliness close to the city center, although there is no ideally clean water on any beach in Pattaya, including Jomtien.
The length of the coastline along which the beach stretches is 6 km. Residents of the city also come here to relax, swim or have a picnic. It is much quieter and calmer here than on the central beach, although the service is no worse.
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes where you can buy or order a variety of Thai and European dishes. Kite surfers come to Jomtien Beach; you can go water skiing or just banana boat.
Wongamat Beach
Wongamat Beach is adjacent to the Nak Lua area and is located approximately 4 km from the city center. This is the only beach in Pattaya that is not divided by a road with hotels and condos located on the shore. It seems that Pattaya hotels with their own beach are concentrated here. The road with public transport runs quite far from the coastline, so mainly those who live nearby come here.
Wongamat Beach is considered one of the cleanest in Pattaya. Its length is about 1.5 km. Along the edges, to the north and south, the coast becomes rocky. The most comfortable area is located in the middle opposite the Sky Beach condominium. Compared to Central Beach, there is no garbage floating here. The water is cloudy due to the fine yellow sand. The beach infrastructure is more modest, since there are much fewer vacationers here than on other Pattaya beaches, but you can buy drinks or eat without any problems.
The Jomtien Beach resort area is considered one of the best holiday options. This calm, quiet place on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand has long been chosen by tourists, travelers and residents. There are no noisy shows or large entertainment venues with blaring music. In this regard, recently numerous 3-star hotels in Pattaya on Jomtien have been built. They are located near the beach area, where the main infrastructure facilities of the area are located.

The business card is a luxurious beach-garden with a shore lined with palm trees. It consists of cozy bungalows, a 13-storey building, and villas. - Long Beach Garden 4*. The airport is just a 5-minute walk from the hotel.
There is a beach, but it is noisy, crowded and littered, with a minimum of amenities. The water near the shore is always muddy.
However, all the inconveniences are offset by the excellent swimming pools.
The best 3-star hotels with private beaches
Tips and useful information
- During the peak season, local beaches are filled with entrepreneurs selling souvenirs and national food. There is no point in buying bright crafts made from semi-precious stones and wood. Most likely, the price for them will be higher than in a souvenir shop at the city market.
- You should not leave household garbage or cigarette butts on the beach. The ideal option is to bring a bag with you, put the trash in it and throw it yourself in the nearest trash bin.
- Girls are prohibited from being on the beaches of Pattaya without the top of a swimsuit and sunbathing topless. Nudism in the kingdom is punishable by fines. The penalty will be 500 baht. And if a couple in love wants to indulge in sex right in the water, they will be punished with 1,000 baht.
- Drinking alcohol is allowed. But there is a huge difference between the words “drink” and “get drunk”. Drunken brawling is punishable by a fine of 5 thousand baht. As well as rudeness, noise, throwing garbage.
- You should avoid visiting the beach when the sun is at its zenith. From 12.00 to 15.00 there is a high risk of burning under the rays of aggressive ultraviolet radiation.
