Traditional dishes of Verona. Verona

Verona-one of the most romantic cities in the world, famous for Shakespeare's story of Romeo and Juliet. It is located in the north of Italy in the Veneto region on the banks of the Adige River. An excellent choice for spending a holiday with your loved one or with friends. There is something to see, where to go, where to eat deliciously and inexpensively, and where to go shopping. Every February, for Valentine's Day, the show "Verona in Love" takes place in Verona, the whole city is decorated with hearts and illuminations, the romanticism of the atmosphere is off the charts. “If you love someone, bring them to Verona” is the city's February motto.

Direct flights from Domodedovo Airport in Moscow by S-7 fly daily at 11.35 am and cost from 6,500 to 20,000 rubles; the earlier you buy a ticket before the departure date, the cheaper it costs. Please note that the S-7 company has different tariffs and if you want to save a little, buy a tariff without luggage. For a 5-7 day vacation, a small suitcase is enough, which is included in the tariff ( hand luggage). Also, you can take a flight with a transfer in Chisinau from All Italia and a number of other companies. When making a transfer, for example, in Paris or Munich, you can also see these cities in 4-5 hours). Next, I will tell you how you can visit Verona quite economically and how much it costs. We will consider two options, economy and

option“I work, I can afford it.”

Video Verona. View from a quadcopter.

So, you have landed at Verona Valerio Catullo airport. Next, you have several ways to get to the city:

1. Bus, also known as Shuttle. Where can I find it? It’s simple, we leave the arrivals hall, turn right, we see the same tourists with suitcases five meters away from you, here it is – the stop. The ticket is sold directly at the same place in the machine, costs 6 euros and is valid for 90 minutes. This excellent and comfortable transport will take you in 25-30 minutes to Verona Station (Verona Porta Nuova), which is located in the city center. Walking from the station to the Arena takes about 15 minutes at an average pace. Which direction should I go? From the bus, turn left and go straight all the time, with slight deviations due to road junctions.

2. Taxis, there are a lot of them at the airport, they are all absolutely legal and safe, but they are expensive. All drivers naturally forget English as soon as you want to negotiate payment. On average, from the airport to the center of Verona, a taxi costs 50-60 euros for tourists who are fluent English language and 20-30 euros if you speak Italian well (tested from personal experience).

3. Rent a car at Verona Airport. A very convenient option for those who, in addition to Verona itself, are planning to visit neighboring cities (Milan, Venice, Bologna, Vicenza, Ferrara and the surrounding area of Lake Garda). You can rent a car in advance while planning your vacation; for your convenience, this can be done on my website. Rental counters for all major companies such as Avis, Hertz, etc. located in the airport area, it is very easy to find them, just pick up the keys to the car and enjoy free movement around the city. You just need to select “Italy” in the search form, dates and click on search, then select the city of Verona, the location of Verona Airport and the time at which you plan to pick up the car.

Regarding our driver’s license, it is, of course, advisable to apply for an international one at the traffic police department at the place of residence, but no one particularly finds fault with ordinary ones. Have a nice holiday;)

p.s. I promise you a separate article about driver license for those who want to live in Italy, since Russian ones can only be used for the first three months.

Where to eat in Verona?

So, you arrived in the center, found your hotel, apartment. I talk in detail about how to choose them and book them profitably here. Of course, you are hungry after the flight and want to start exploring the excellent Italian cuisine. I recommend you visit the following establishments where you can have a delicious and inexpensive meal in Verona: pizzeria Bella Napoli, they have the most delicious pizza in the city, be sure to try the pizza that bears the name of the restaurant. The prices are quite affordable, pizza costs from 6 euros, three of you can have a good meal for 15-20 euros. Appetizers, pastas and desserts at Bella Napoli are also excellent. I also recommend for a family or a large group to order a meter pizza, but it really is almost a meter long). Pizzeria address: Via Guglielmo Marconi 16 | Via Guglielmo Marconi 11, don’t be surprised that there are two addresses, this is the same establishment, it’s just that everyone who wants to eat pizza stopped flocking to one restaurant and on the opposite side of the road the owners opened a second, but newer one. The photo shows an old pizzeria. It’s better to book a table for the evening in advance, five years in advance. Once I just went there without a reservation and there was a table... During the day you can almost always eat without a reservation or queues. In general, I highly recommend it on behalf of everyone local residents this establishment, and I remind you once again that you can try not only pizza there, but also all traditional Italian dishes. You can also take pizza away or order delivery to your apartment or hotel.

Another very nice and tasty place in Verona Cappa Cafe. The prices here are also quite affordable. A very atmospheric place with soft sofas and two summer verandas, one of which has a beautiful view of the Adige River. It’s nice to sit here in a cheerful, noisy group over an aperitif, or spend an evening with your family.

This restaurant is located next to the Adige River. You need to cross the bridge and the road (see the path on). But you don’t need to climb the steps, but walk along the street 200 meters to the restaurant “Redentore” (translated into Russian as “Savior”). Prices are about the same as in Liston.

What to eat in Verona

Typical dishes for the Verona region (which the translator encountered):

Tortellini di Valeggio

First course. The recipe is kept secret. The homeland of these tortellini is the town Borghetto di Valeggio sul Mincio. Read more.

Gnocchi da patata

Potato dumplings (Italian pasta with added potatoes). They are prepared exclusively by hand and served with tomato sauce, fried onions, carrots and herbs. First course.

Risotto al vino Amarone

The most revered first course in Verona. It combines two excellent ingredients. For cooking, rice with small grains of the variety is used vialone nano IGP (nano in Italian means “dwarf” - translator’s note), which grows on the island Isola della Scala and wine Amarone della Valpolicella. It turns out very tasty dish, prized in northern Italy.

Typical wines of Verona and the province

Bardolino- the simplest and cheapest wine (but no less tasty).

Valpolicella- more valuable wine.

Valpolicella ripasso- even better quality and expensive wine.

Amarone di valpolicella- the most valuable and expensive wine. It has a higher degree (~15%) and is slightly sweet. Drink little - excessive alcohol consumption harms even healthy men in the prime of life!

When going on a trip, we always study in detail information about local attractions and traditional local cuisine. Taking this aspect into account, I will tell you about gastronomic.

As you remember, in my first article about I already mentioned that each region or individual city in Italy is famous for its dishes and products. Recipes for their preparation are carefully preserved and passed down from generation to generation in every family. Also, not a single city holiday is complete without them, which is beautifully called “sagra” here.

Historical reference

Since Roman times, Verona has always been associated with rich and delicious cuisine. The families of local patricians were famous for their large-scale and full of appearances receptions. Medieval chronicles contain references to the lavish dinners that the heads of the famous Verona Church loved so much.
Local residents have carried this love for “delicious food” through the centuries and to this day do not indulge in this desire.

P.S. Let me remind you that here we are talking specifically about this region. If you are somewhere else, I assure you, they will tell you about the unique taste of their dishes and will not lie at all)))) Another feature of the Italians that I really like.

Traditional dishes of Verona

Bollito con la pearà

One of the main dishes of local cuisine is boiled young beef on the bone. To add a special flavor, celery, onions and carrots are added to the broth. The meat is served with la pearà sauce. To prepare it, use broth, to which breadcrumbs, grated cheese (Parmiggiano Reggiano) and black pepper and bone marrow are added.
By tradition, not a single Sunday family lunch in Verona is complete without this dish.

Bigoli al ragù di asino

Bigoli is one of the types of pasta, which is thick-walled and hollow inside spaghetti. In Verona, they are prepared with the addition of minced donkey meat. Tasty? Incredible! It’s impossible to describe, I suggest you try it!

Gnocchi (gnocchi)

Small balls of mashed potatoes, with the addition of a little flour and eggs.
Served boiled with the addition of tomatoes or meat stew.

Pastissada di Caval

Another favorite dish local residents, which is prepared according to ancient recipes from horse meat.
The tradition of eating horse meat dates back to the mid-5th century AD. In 489, after one of the hardest battles between the king of the Ost-Goths, Theodoric, and the head of a detachment of barbarian mercenaries in the Roman Empire, Odoacer, a lot of horses froze (it was very cold that year). Exhausted by hunger and constant attacks from enemies, the city residents decided to marinate the meat in local well-aged red wine and season it with spices.
These days, the meat is also pre-soaked in red wine and then simmered over very low heat. It turns out very tasty.

The list of traditional dishes is complemented by two very tasty types of risotto

Risotto al Amarone

Prepared with the addition of local Amarone wine, which is highly valued here. The technology of its production is a rather long and labor-intensive process.

Risotto al tastasal

When preparing it, one of the prerequisites is the use of Vialone Nano rice, to which minced pork is added.

And, of course, on any menu you will find the famous polenta.

Favorite dish of residents northern Italy. Polenta is made from corn flour, which is poured into boiling water, stirring all the time so that no lumps form. The process is reminiscent of preparing semolina porridge.

Eaten hot or chilled. To do this, pour the hot mass into a mold and wait until it cools down. Then it is cut into pieces and heated on the grill.
In Verona, polenta is served with stewed beans or game meat.

Where to taste local cuisine in Verona

Just recently I discovered an amazing osteria "Al Duca", which belongs to the same Verona family. The idea of the opening belonged to the grandmother of the manager Alessandro, whose business was supported by his mother, and later he himself got involved.

The Osteria is located in the heart of Verona. Literally a few steps from one of the most beautiful and mesmerizing sights of the city - Arche Scaligere.

The restaurant occupies the first and second floors of a building whose construction dates back to the 13th century. By the way, house this one is very popular among tourists, which causes some inconvenience to residents. They say that he lived here himself Romeo Montague (of course, this is a legend)!

The design of the establishment is in the rustic style, which has become quite popular in Lately. Delicious, home-cooked food, an excellent selection of wines, a convenient location and a warm welcome have made this place a favorite among Veronese families. And our couple is no exception.
I would like to note that literally next door there is another osteria this family "Osteria Giulietta e Romeo".

The menu and address of the establishment can be found on the website, where there is also an option in Russian.
Pay attention to a very pleasant moment. The osteria offers a two-course menu option that you can choose from a list. The cost is 18 euros (the dishes are quite large). There are also options with meat only, the price is correspondingly slightly higher.

Attention! If you plan to visit the establishment on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, then I advise you to book a table in advance. These days the osteria operates in two rounds. At other times it is quite free here).

Well, that's all I wanted to tell you today. To tell the truth, my appetite has worked in earnest)))

What Verona dishes did you like?

Leave your comments!

Best regards, Mila!

Experienced tourists, when asked where to eat in Verona, advise choosing catering establishments away from historical center. This is where the Veronese people themselves eat, because it is both tastier and cheaper.

List all best restaurants And best cafes Verona is simply impossible, let's just say a few words about several interesting establishments. Those who love expensive “author’s” cuisine should book a table at (address: Via Alberto Mario, 12). The restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere and a large selection of dishes. Vecio Macello, in which the average bill for two will be approximately 60 EUR.

Do you want to try an exquisite fish menu and are you willing to pay 200 EUR for lunch for two? Visit a restaurant. Not far from the Amphitheater there is a more affordable Verona fish restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine - Al Capitan della Cittadella, the average bill for two is about 70 EUR.

There are also less “scary” prices in Verona restaurants, for example, in the osteria Il Bertoldo and a restaurant La cantina del 15 You can have a hearty and tasty lunch for 20 EUR per person. And very inexpensive restaurants in Verona are pizzerias like Il pizzino da Guido or Pizzeria Vesuvio 3, where you can order (including delivery) pizza and other snacks from 4-6 EUR per serving.

Hi all! When we were in Verona, Chiara and Fillippo, an Italian couple from whom we rented accommodation through the airbnb.ru service (read more about this), gave us a lot useful tips and recommendations for your stay in Verona. The guys told us about one very good establishment in Verona, where you can eat delicious food, and which they themselves visit very often. This is an absolutely non-tourist place, secludedly hidden from public view. We are talking about the tavern "Osteria al Duca" (which means "the Duke's tavern" in Italian).

They say the tavern building was previously Romeo's home. I think this is not true, but the legend is beautiful in itself. What is true is that the tavern building was built in the 13th century and it is the oldest tavern in Verona. The owners of the tavern are a married couple, they treat the tavern very sensitively and with care! It's incredibly cozy!

We had dinner on the 2nd floor of the tavern, and indeed, only locals dined in the tavern; there were no tourists except us. In general, it is worth noting that restaurants and cafes located close to the main attractions of Verona, for example near the Arena di Verona, are more aimed at tourists, so the food may not be so colorful and traditional. But each region of Italy has its own peculiarities in the preparation of certain dishes, and certain types of wine are popular. Going to the tavern "Osteria al Duca" you can try the cuisine typical of Verona, as well as the wines that are produced specifically in Verona.

If you don’t know where to eat in Verona, but want to try the cuisine and wines typical of Verona, I recommend you try this at the Osteria al Duca tavern:

1. of the dishes - Veronese thick spaghetti with meat ragout "Veronese BIGOLI WITH DONKEY RAGU" or homemade noodles - pappardelle with duck ragout - "Pappardelle with duck sauce"

2. from wines - red wines Valpolicella, Amarone, white wines - Soave, Lugana, Cu Stoza

The owners of this tavern run another one - "Osteria Giulietta e Romeo", with the same menu and slightly different interior. It is located not far from the first tavern.
