About Italy

Reus is a municipality in Catalonia, part of the Baix Camp district, which in turn is part of the province. The total area of the city is about 54 sq. km, with a population of just over 100 thousand. The town is famous for its shopping, attractions and aromatic vermouth.

History of the city of Reus

Reus is not rich in historical events. The first mention of the city is found in documents of the 12th century. Dukes and kings did not stay there, no fateful battles took place. Only in the 19th century did almost all of Spain start talking about it. Due to the rapid development of industry and trade, Reus is one of the leading trading places in southern Europe. And today the city can boast of excellent shopping and the level of tourist services.

What to see in Reus

  • The sights of Reus will delight any tourist who appreciates majestic architectural forms and modern comfort. Here are the main ones:
  • Prima Square is located in the historical part of the city. There is a bronze monument to the great General Juan Prim on horseback. The general became famous for his many victories and was without a doubt a fearless and great military leader.
  • The Fortuny Theater is located nearby. Built in 1882, it underwent reconstruction and reopened its doors in 1988. The theater was opened by a concert by Montserrat Caballe, and today it is the second most important theater in Catalonia.
  • Any walk around Reus should not be complete without visiting the unusual three-story center. It houses the interactive Gaudi Museum. Here you can get acquainted with the creations of the great architect of Catalonia, learn about his life and working methods. Elements of works, personal items and documents telling about the life and creative path of Antoni Gaudi are presented in an original manner.

It is better to plan your trip to Reus in advance, outline an approximate route and places you would like to see. The city is very rich in beautiful modernist houses and shady ancient streets with a large number of cozy cafes and restaurants.

The most common route for walking in Reus is the “Road of Modernism” or the Road of Modernism. It starts from the bus station. It's a ten minute walk to the center of the Old Town. I decided to use this route.

On the way to the Old Town, there is a monument to a steam locomotive in the square. The narrow gauge railway Carrilet Reus - Salou operated from 1887 to 1975. The locomotive worked on this road until 1973, then was stored in a warehouse. In 2005, after restoration, it was installed on the Rambla del Carrilet.

Walking through the modern quarters of the city, you involuntarily pay attention to the bright, picturesque paintings (graffiti) on the walls of residential buildings. A calm, measured life flows in quiet and cozy courtyards.

Construction of the temple began in 1512 and was completely completed in the 1600s.

The hexagonal bell tower is one of the recognizable symbols of the city. Its height is 62 meters. From the observation deck of the bell tower you can see all the most interesting places Reus.

A round stained glass rose window, which is located at the top of the cathedral façade.

Chapel of the Holy Communion

It was added much later (in 1694).

Between the temple and the Old Fish Market Square there is a sculpture "Wind"(1989), created by the famous Catalan sculptor Josep Jasan.

Next to St. Peter's Church is located Old Fish Market, and now it’s just a nice square.

This unique monument was erected in Reus atthere is a holiday Ciutat Gegantera, which took place in the city in 1993. The main characters of the holidays in Reus are huge giant dolls that take part in colorful street processions. The Indian installed in the square is one of these heroes.

Going shopping in Reus is very convenient and pleasant. All the streets are beautiful and well-groomed, both wide modern streets and narrow ancient streets. Shops in the city are grouped compactly in one place. There is even a distribution by street. One sells shoes, another sells jewelry and watches, the next sells clothes, and so on. Please note that the stores have different categories. Some are aimed at the mass segment, while others sell luxury goods. So, don’t be surprised if in one store you see a shirt for 15-20 euros, and in another for 150-200 euros.

Hi all!

Reus- a city that is part of the province of Tarragona, Catalonia (Spain).

On the Internet you can see that many sites indicate: “The city of Reus is a paradise for shopaholics.” This is more of an attraction for tourists. In fact, after the stately city of Tarragona, Reus seems like a shabby backwater. It is located very far from the sea, the streets are unattractive and initially made some kind of negative impression, since I was counting on full-fledged shopping. I think that this city is not at all necessary to visit, but it was still interesting to visit there in the end.

I’ll tell you about visiting the city of Reus and my impressions of what I saw.

My husband, daughter and I arrived in this city from Salou on the BUS PLANA bus using a travel card in the morning. They brought us to the bus station, and from there we had to go back.

The photo in the distance shows a white booth with the letter “i” drawn on it. In the morning a young man was sitting there, giving out free city maps, advised tourists in Russian on various issues. This booth was not open in the evening.

I photographed the preserved map for clarity.

I repeat that we were counting on shopping in the city of Reus. And we went towards the small shops in the center from the bus stop along the street c. sant joan and then went to Mercadal Square.

The streets in the city are narrow, the roads are good, there are two lanes of traffic, there are pedestrian crossings and traffic lights, in this regard everything is civilized.

There are catchy and attractive design of store facades.

The pictures on the sign seemed original to me.

The city made such an impression that all the locals know each other.

A school-age girl was standing on the balcony; most likely her classmates were passing by and everyone was greeting her and talking about something.

The monument to an ancient steam locomotive on one of the streets reminded me of our Russian railway stations and locomotive monuments.

The city of Reus itself is so small, you can walk around it in a day.

Along the way we came across various cafes, the prices were more attractive compared to Salou and Tarragona.

Tourists and local population there were few on the streets. It turned out that we ended up in a Spanish town and looked at the leisurely daily city life of the locals, but it was not particularly busy, since most people were at their jobs.

In Spain, the busy life begins after 19.00 in the evening, this is when locals come to pubs, meet with friends and can sit with a glass of beer until late at night. And during the day, some kind of movement occurs only until 13.00, then SIESTA begins - a long lunch break, usually lasts until 16.00, and sometimes until 19.00. At this time, all shops and shops are closed.

On the Internet they write that on Wednesdays no siesta in Reus. We went on a different day of the week and the siesta was in full swing.

Look at these houses, there is nothing attractive about them, and this is one of the streets in the center of Reus.

It seemed to me that all the money for the improvement of the city goes to Tarragona, and there is not enough money for Reus. This also suggests that this city does not attract tourists at all.

In Reus there is such a feature - the entrance to the store/window itself is small, but in fact the department is very long. They are simply tall for the size of the display case.

The prices in such departments did not please me at all; they sell consumer goods and are expensive. Only tourists from Russia enter them in the hope of finding something attractive. We came across few such shops in the first half, but after lunch they were all closed for siesta.

  • One of the attractions of Reus is monument to General Prima , which is located on the square of the same name (Plaça de Prim).

Here the facades of the houses have already been restored to their divine appearance; it was nice to look at them.

Along the way we met one of my favorite departments Stradivarius.

But we didn’t buy anything here, because the day before we visited large shopping centers in Tarragona and they all sell the same thing there.

On one of the facades of the houses we saw a monument of a man (at first I thought it was Robin Hood), who was pointing his finger at the window of a neighboring house. It turned out that a sculptor lived in this house with a little man, he quarreled with a neighbor from the house opposite and then created this monument, saying, look people, what a bad person lives there.

We were already pretty hungry and decided to look into a local cafe, a friendly girl worked there who spoke Russian well, she married a Spaniard, her husband and she run this cafe in Reus, and they themselves live in Cabrils. It's always nice to meet friendly compatriots in an unfamiliar city far from your homeland.

The prices in this establishment were normal; pasta could be ordered for 5 euros (about 350 rubles). Then, for the first time, my husband and I tried local draft beer Estrella (star). They serve olives with beer. They also recommend trying local vermouth as an alcoholic beverage, but we never had the chance.

I’ll also say something about the language barrier. You can travel in Spain without knowing any other languages; gestures always help. The workers of cafes and shops spoke to us in Russian as best they could or spoke a few words in English. The only thing you need to have in the company of a person who knows his way around the map and the area well, street names are signed everywhere.

I’ll show you a few more photos of streets and houses; it was already busy time, almost everything was closed, all that was left was to walk and contemplate.

I captured prices in euros at some real estate agency in Reus.

  • SQUARE MERCADAL

Then we went to Mercadal Square, it is central in Reus, everyone passes through it tourist routes, pedestrian streets depart.

One of the attractions of this square is House Navas / Casa Navas.

House Casa Navas, built in the period 1901-1908, by many compared to a stone garden.
This House was built in Art Nouveau style by the architect Luis Domenech i Montanera. The house has three floors and two balconies, one of which is a corner one. On the left side of the façade, at the corner of the third floor, a tower was originally built, which during Civil War was destroyed by a bomb. Apart from this, the house still retains its original appearance.
The house is called a stone garden, because the main motif of the building's interior is a floral masterpiece woven from unique marble, ceramic, artistic works made by the best craftsmen of Reus.

Everything here, including mosaics on the floor and walls, furniture, lamps, window glass and even staircases, is decorated with plant landscapes and bas-reliefs.

There were cafes here too.

I don’t know if you have heard that elections will be held in October 2017 regarding the separation of Catalonia from Spain. The balconies of houses in the central square were full of posters and slogans. Some kind of rebellious political mood was felt. An attractive place for tourists in Reus is Gaudi Museum (Gaudi Center Reus), it is located on Mercadal Square. It is believed that it was in Reus that the famous spanish architect

I'm glad that we were able to visit this museum in Reus. I told you more about it in my other review. If you are planning a trip to Reus, I recommend the Gaudi Museum first.

There is a Gothic building right next door Priory Church of Sant Pere or Church of St. Peter - one of the main oldest attractions in Reus.

Dedicated to Saint Peter, patron saint of Reus. And the architect Antonio Gaudi was baptized in this temple.

Near the Church of Sant Pere (between the temple and the Fish Market Square / Plaza de les Peixateries Velles) you can see a sculpture of a naked woman - El Vent("Wind")(1989).

created by one of the most famous Catalan sculptors Josep Jassans (Josep Salvado Jassans) (1938-2006)

Another attraction we saw was a monument to the poet and playwright Joaquin Bartrin.

It was interesting to walk along the streets of the city in good weather, it’s just a pity that there is no sea in Reus, then tourists would come there more often.

ABOUT SHOPPING CENTERS

During the trip we visited the main shopping centers, there were a total of 2 of them. I will give a description of each of them.

    El Pallol Shopping Center

It is located next to Mercadal Square and the Sant Pere Temple, but I do not recommend that you waste your precious time on it.

We followed the map to this point and didn’t understand at first where the shopping center was?

El Pallol - It's not a big building with a lot of departments like we're used to, but just a couple of departments downstairs and upstairs around an open terrace.

I read on the Internet that supposedly

When purchasing at the El Pallol shopping center for the amount over 20 euros available 2 tickets free to the Gaudi Center.

But what to buy there? And I don’t even know if this promotion is valid at the moment.

There is nothing good about the departments on the ground floor at all.

And upstairs there are only two normal departments, one with Jeck Jones men's denim.

And another with C&A children's clothing, prices are high even during sales.

I captured another children's department in this shopping center.

  • Shopping center La Fira Center Comercial

The only normal shopping center in Reus is La Fira. But if you were in Tarragona in a shopping center Parc Centra l, then at La Fira it’s the same, only there are fewer departments.

Address: Avinguda de Sant Jordi, 6, 43201 Reus, Tarragona, Spain

This shopping center is located at the very top of my map (circled).

Main departments: Bershka, H&M, Zara, Mango, PULL&BEAR, again Stradivarius, Jeck Jones and others.

Reus is a town located near the resorts of Salou, La Pineda, the birthplace of the great architect Antonio Gaudi, and the second most populous city in the province of Tarragona.
From Monday to Saturday from 9-30 am to 21-30. Work on holidays from 10-30 to 21-30: buy a ticket for 10 trips, take the bus and get there by bus No. 47 Bus Plana from Salou in no more than 25 minutes, board the flight at any stop on the route going in the desired direction, along the way the bus passes the resort of La Pineda.
A trip to Reus is useful not only for getting to know the birthplace of the great Gaudi, but also for shopping, because... Closer to the coast, the price in stores is more expensive, and there is less choice, so make purchases in the nearest populated areas brings variety to the lives of vacationers and benefits for saving the family budget, and it never hurts to unwind and see the surroundings.

Typically, a travel company provides a set of booklets that contains a map of Reus, a schedule of excursions and similar materials.
On the picture. The girls at the stop in Salou, representatives of the Plana transport network, are very friendly and will show and tell you how to get there and then return from the trip. The bus is always clean, it is pleasant to make short trips on it. In the photo, bus number 47 arrived at the Reus bus station from Salou. There is a map of the city at the counters, which is easy to navigate. No sooner had we left the station than we were greeted by a market of cheap things, including clothes, in the photo everything costs 10 euros. On the Rambla del Carrilet there is a monument - a narrow gauge steam locomotive railway, which operated until 1975, 1000 mm gauge.

Fruit in city stores is cheaper than on the coast. On the streets of Reus there are many different cafes with tables, sidewalk paths are tiled and made of special bricks. Like everywhere else, real estate is also sold here - the prices are different, through the window you can get acquainted with the information without going to the agency. These are the signs located on the roads of a Spanish town; the closer to the center, the narrower the streets.

Modernism route in Reus

A walking tour of the architectural sights of the city is very popular among tourists, see the route below on the map, marked with red arrows with large red circles. Church of Sant Pere(St. Peter's) on Carrer de la Font is one of the main attractions of Reus.

Traveling through the streets of Reus, you will encounter various cathedrals, temples and monuments along the way. Stopping next to the cathedral, we try to read the name and information, there is no one to ask - there are tourists or Spaniards all around whose language we do not know, and we exchange only standard phrases from the tourist dictionary. Using the information we picked up at the hotel, we read that this is the Church of St. Peter (La Prioral de Sant Pere), where the great Antonio Gaudi was baptized. As you can see, the temple is made in the late Gothic style, and at a height of 60 meters, on the bell tower, there is Observation deck, construction began in 1512, construction was completed in 1601. Above the entrance there is a niche with a statue of St. Peter, the church is located near the Mercadal market square (Plaça del Mercadal).
Mercadal

Plaça Del Mercadal is one of the most important squares of the city, through which all tourists pass and citizens come here to relax. The Gaudi Museum (Gaudi Center) is located here, although there are no buildings built according to his design in his hometown. Nearby is the city hall and the elegant house Casa Piñol. In the square you can take a break, sit on a bench or in a cafe, drink coffee, eat ice cream or pizza. The street decorated with umbrellas looks very nice. The time to visit the Gaudi Museum takes approximately 1.5 hours; tickets can be bought in the building itself on the ground floor in the office travel company Reus.

In General Prim Square (a native of the city of Juan (Joan) Prim, Count of Reus) in Reus there is a monument to a 19th-century commander sitting on horseback with a raised saber in his right hand, who is a significant figure for Catalonia, having won many victories. The equestrian monument was created by the sculptor Lewis Puiggener i Fernández in 1891, and the grand opening took place in 1893. The monument is complemented by bas-reliefs from the life of the general and the coats of arms of the city of Reus and Juan Prima. General Prim died at the age of 56 in Madrid; while leaving the Cortes building, an attempt was made on his life and he died from infection of his wounds. Nearby is the Fortuny Theater, here you can see a map of the city with a mark of the location of the square and attractions.

Artist's area Fortuny, named after him (Plaza del Pintor Fortuny)

Tarragona Reus. On the square, in front of the building of the La Caixa bank, there is a monument to the artist Mariano Fortuny (1838 - 1874), during his short life (36 years), having received wide recognition already in his time, the square is located next to Freedom Square.

Going shopping

Those who come to relax by the sea often make a trip to Reus, so it is very convenient to combine an educational trip with shopping. The city has more than 500 shops, especially in the center, including stores of world famous brands. Tourists from different countries often flock here.

Many centuries passed before people learned about Reus. In the mid-19th century, thanks to the intensive development of commerce and industry, Reus became the second largest city in Catalonia and one of the leading centers of commerce in southern Europe. Silk, cotton, and alcoholic beverages were traded here. Many came here in hopes of making money, and some actually succeeded. The most fortunate of these lucky ones remained in Reus. These were wealthy people who did not skimp on spending money on decorating their houses, wanting to amaze their neighbors with their taste and originality. So, next to the squalid shacks of working-class districts, exquisite buildings of various architectural styles began to appear, the dominant of which in those days was the Art Nouveau style.

Innovative, destroying conventional boundaries and challenging modernity personified all the changes that took place in the minds of people at the beginning of the 20th century. This landmark of Reus has survived to this day. Art Nouveau, as a stylistic direction, was a synthesis of the arts. This synthesis was based on architecture, which united all other forms of art - from painting to clothing design. The artistic language of Art Nouveau largely reflected the ideas and images of symbolism, which were intertwined with complex stylized plant motifs, rhythm and flexibility of smooth lines and unexpected color accents. The Art Nouveau style revealed a complete and harmonious combination of structural and decorative elements. The lines of the ornament carried not only an aesthetic, but also a symbolic meaning, and were an attempt to express spiritual and emotional work and comprehension. The latest technical and constructive means of those times were used, and the free planning method was used. Therefore, buildings built in the Art Nouveau style have a distinctly individual appearance.

Luis Domenic and Montaner

One of the brightest representatives of Art Nouveau, whose elegance and unique style influenced many other Catalan architects, is Lluís Domenech i Montaner. Domenic e Montaner was a man with an active life position and possessed outstanding organizational talents. His interests extended not only to architecture, but also to publishing. In addition, he was a writer, lecturer, politician and director of the Barcelona School of Architecture. It was his buildings that determined the architectural appearance of Reus at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Among his buildings in Reus are the house of the notary Pere Rull, the house of Felix Gasul, as well as the famous house of the merchant Joaquim Navas - Casa Navas.

House Navas

La casa Navàs is a magnificent mansion that stands out from others thanks not only to its architecture, but also to its magnificent interior design. The building has the highest artistic value and is one of the best creations of Luis Domenic and Montaner. The house was built in 1908 by order of Joaquim Navàs Padró, a successful textile merchant and spinning mill owner. Domenic e Montaner built a building for their client in which there was an apartment on the upper floors and a “Parisian style” store on the lower floors. On the side of the Market Square (Plaza Mercadal), the building was crowned by a corner turret, which, unfortunately, was destroyed as a result of bombing during the Spanish Civil War. To this day, the house has preserved its authentic original furnishings, including magnificent furniture by Gaspar Homar. On the ground floor of the building there is still a fabric store open to everyone. Currently, the municipality of Reus and the descendants of Joaquim Navas are jointly developing a restoration project for the house, in particular it is planned to reconstruct the facade and restore the original turret, destroyed during the Civil War.

Casa Gasull is a house located at calle Sant Joan, 29. The house of olive oil merchant Félix Gasull was built by Luis Domenic i Montaner in 1911. According to the trends of the times, living quarters were located on the upper floors, and the lower floor was used to house a store and warehouses. The architect used a new mixture of styles here. The Art Nouveau style is combined with the later, novocentism, which had barely become fashionable at that time, more strict and gravitating toward the classics. Among the decorative elements decorating the house, the decoration of facades characteristic of the Art Nouveau style and the use of mosaic ceramics and forged grilles especially stand out. The structure of the facades mainly belongs to another stylistic movement called Novocentism.

Historically, the situation was such that the customer of the house, Felix Gasoul, was never able to fully enjoy his new home, as he was soon killed in his own office during the turbulent anarchic years. Nevertheless, his enterprise survived. The business was successfully continued by sons and grandsons. Despite all the difficulties, Félix Gasull continues to do the same today, maintaining Reus in its status as one of the main centers for the production of olive oil of the highest quality in Catalonia.

Casa Rull is a house located at calle Sant Joan, 27. The house of the notary Pere Rull was built by Luis Domenic and Montaner in 1900. Since 1925, Casa Rull has become the property of the municipality of Reus. Today, the building houses the office of the city Department of Culture, and the mansion is used for a variety of cultural events. In 1996, a complete restoration of the building was completed, in particular the magnificent facades, which were preserved in excellent condition. Quite interesting decorative elements of the facades are the alternation of natural stone and brick and a stone column at the junction of the central and side facades. The exquisite balcony with floral patterns bears a bright imprint of the Art Nouveau style, and the door and window openings are designed in a different style - neo-Gothic. These two styles are reconciled by dragons, which are a common motif in both Catalan Art Nouveau and Neo-Gothic.

In General Prim Square, one of the main squares of the historical part of the city, there is a monument to General Juan Prim, Count of Reus. Born in Reus, the outstanding Spanish politician and successful military leader of the 19th century, Juan Prim y Prats (1814-1870), was at one time one of the most influential people in Spain, famous for his numerous and varied victories. General Prim himself lived an unusually active, eventful life, and, as always in such cases, not all of his actions deserve approval. For example, the rank of general was brought to him by the bombing of Barcelona in the fall of 1843, which caused widespread destruction in the city. At the same time, Prim's outstanding fearlessness is not questioned. One has only to remember that he was the governor of Puerto Rico, commander-in-chief of the Spanish army, when the Spaniards, together with the French and British, invaded Mexico to demand payment of the foreign debt. Particularly memorable is his triumph in Africa - the victory in Tetouan, which turned him into a real national hero. His figure gained even greater weight after numerous attempts to carry out military coups in order to limit the Spanish monarchy, and active participation in the Glorious Revolution in 1868, which led to the overthrow of the Bourbon dynasty and the expulsion of Queen Isabella II from Spain.

Oddly enough, the first monument dedicated to the tireless general appeared not in Reus, but in Barcelona, in the Ciutadella Park. In 1887, the Barcelona authorities decided to perpetuate the memory of the man who helped destroy the giant military fortification - the Citadel, which had long been a symbol of the hated occupation regime. This was the first equestrian monument in Barcelona. It was created by Lluís Puiggener i Fernández. Somewhat later, in 1891, he created another monument dedicated to Prim, which was installed in Reus two years later.

The monument consists of an equestrian statue cast in bronze and a pedestal made of yellowish marble and decorated with bronze high reliefs. One of them is dedicated to the Battle of Tetuan, the other depicts Prim's speech to the officers of his army. Two more high reliefs decorate the family coat of arms of General Prim and the coat of arms of the city of Reus with laurel branches and the inscription “To General Prim from the Motherland” (À PRIM SU PATRIA).

There is an urban legend that at one time the authorities of Reus gave complete artistic freedom to the author of the monument, setting only one condition: the general’s horse must be turned backwards towards Tarragona. The fact is that he is Reus's long-time rival. In 1833, Tarragona was confirmed as the capital of the province. In terms of the number of inhabitants and its economic parameters, the city of Reus could also reasonably lay claim to the status of the capital, but preference was given to Tarragona - mainly due to the presence in the city seaport and the episcopal residence.

Gaudí's center is located on Plaça Mercadal, which means Market Square. Officially, the famous Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi was born in the city of Reus. There is another version, according to which it is possible that Gaudi’s birthplace is neighboring Riudoms. The question has not been fully clarified to this day, although the Reus authorities, of course, prefer the first version. In any case, it is reliably known that Gaudi spent his childhood between Reus and Riudoms. In Reus he attended college and it was here that he first became acquainted with examples of Gothic and neoclassical architecture, and in Riudoms he often visited his father’s workshop. At the age of 16, Gaudi left Reus without leaving any of his creations in the city. However, there is a so-called “Gaudi route” in the city, including the church of San Pedro, where he was baptized, the college where he studied until he was 16, and the places he loved to visit. Since 2007, this route has been enriched with another object - the Gaudí Center, the appearance of which gave a new powerful impetus to the development of tourism in Reus.

The Gaudí Center is a unique place of its kind, created so that those wishing to have the opportunity to get acquainted with the life and work of Gaudí, immerse themselves in his world in an unusual, lively interactive manner. With the help of numerous models and playful exhibits, the center allows a better understanding of some of the technical aspects of Gaudí's work, revealing analogies between design elements and natural objects. Gaudi's personal belongings, documents are also presented here, and interesting facts concerning the life of the great architect are highlighted.

The exhibition of the Gaudi Museum is located on three floors. The inspection usually starts from the top. The exhibition on the third floor is called “Gaudi and the Universe”. It introduces visitors to Gaudi's sources of inspiration and the principles of his artistic language. Here you can also watch a short introductory documentary “Invitation to the World of Gaudi.” The duration of the film is about 7 minutes. The exhibition on the second floor is called “Gaudi - the Innovator”. It explains in detail the stages of work on a variety of projects, such as the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Casa Mila, Casa Batlo and much more. And on the ground floor there is the exhibition “Gaudi and Reus”, where you can see valuable documents, photographs of the era, sketches, personal belongings of the architect, get acquainted with the main milestones of his life and plunge into the atmosphere of Reus of the late 19th - early 20th centuries.

Church of Sant Pere

In front of you is the Church of Sant Pere - main temple cities. It is made in the Gothic style. It was here that Antonio Gaudi was baptized.

The main facade of the church is made in the Renaissance style. It is divided into two parts. At the bottom there is a portal, in the center of which there is a statue of St. Peter, patron saint of Reus. At the top there is a large round stained glass roseton window, which defines the interior lighting of the temple. The hexagonal bell tower, built in 1566, 62 m high, is one of the symbols of Reus. In 2004, a long 15-year work on the restoration of the church was completed.

The first mention of the church dates back to the 12th century. It was originally a modest church in the Roman style. The religious community organized here in 1159 was originally named after the Virgin Mary. In 1325, Pope John XXII, while in Avignon, granted the parish of Reus the status of a priory, and its chief abbot the title of prior. In the years that followed, the temple was expanded, and in the 15th century. it was consecrated in honor of St. Peter, who is the patron saint of Reus.

The Giant Doll Monument is a monument depicting a giant Indian. This unusual monument was erected in Reus in honor of the Ciutat Gegantera festival, which was held here in 1993. The main characters of this holiday, traditional for Catalonia, are giants, that is, huge hollow figures depicting various historical and fairy-tale characters. The giants, which are the property of the city, participate in all city festivals and carnivals, marching through the streets in colorful processions. Two of the ten giants of Reus represent the Indians (Els Indis) and represent the period when many representatives of Catalan families went to America to seek their fortune in order to escape poverty and hunger. The height of the giants sometimes reaches three and a half meters, and their weight is 100 kg. Almost all Catalan cities have their own giants. The Ciutat Gegantera celebration, which is held in the city chosen as the main “city of giants” for the current year, involves “teams of giants” from various parts of Catalonia. That Reus was the main "city of giants" in 1993 is reflected in the inscription on the stone to the left of the monument: Reus, ciutat gegantera de Catalunya (Reus, city of the giants of Catalonia).
