Seasons, beach resorts, tours. Where is the best place to relax in Greece? A relaxing holiday in Greece

Greece is one of the most popular holiday destinations among Russian tourists, and it is a truly amazing country with magnificent sandy beaches, unique architectural monuments (after all, the cradle of civilization) and most importantly - amazingly kind and sympathetic people. The Greeks have a special attitude towards us, tourists from Russia. A tourist from Russia for the Greeks is not only money, it is sacred. We choose a holiday in Greece.

Perhaps this is historically due to religion, or maybe something else, but the fact remains a fact. My wife and I have been vacationing in Greece for ten years now; we have traveled almost the entire country and gained some vacation experience. For those who are going on holiday to Greece, I advise you to carefully read this article and maybe something will be useful to you.

Almost every fifth Greek has a Russian wife, and the most common female names in Greece are Katerina and Elena. Without delving into this topic, I will say one thing: when you arrive in Greece for the first time, you will immediately feel that you are sincerely welcome here and you will love this country forever.
For those who are going to Greece for the first time, the following holiday criteria are primarily important: it should be warm, sandy beaches with a gentle approach to the sea, the presence of taverns and shops and the presence of a promenade, i.e. places for walking. There are such places in Greece and there are quite a few of them.

Crete. Road in the mountains.

In one of the taverns. It's nice to spend an evening in such a stylized tavern.

When traveling around Greece by car, you can stop at one of these many beaches and take a swim. It's almost a wild beach. The entry into the sea is gentle and in some places there are even sun loungers and umbrellas

In Greece you can not only have a great time on the beach, but also take an amazing journey back in time. No country has such a number of ancient ancient monuments, familiar from childhood from history lessons. Everyone hears names like ancient Olympia , Delphi, Mycenae, All this and much more, no less interesting, are the most visited tourist places. In any TA there will always be excursion tours to these cities and surrounding areas.
For those who are going to Greece for the first time, you need to know that a beach holiday in Greece is a different story. There are beaches for every taste at your disposal. If you remember the Bounty advertisement, it’s about Greek beaches. Secluded coves with clean sandy beaches, clear sea and stunning mountain scenery. No one has yet remained indifferent to these beauties. Along with this, you need to understand that in Greece the holiday is completely different, not the same as in Turkey or Egypt. I would say that they are fundamentally different. If in the mentioned countries you can get all the pleasures without leaving the hotel, then in Greece all the most interesting things are located just beyond its territory. In addition, in Greek hotels you will hardly find such fun and wild animation as, for example, in Turkey.

The swimming season (this is when all age categories can comfortably swim in the sea) in Greece begins in early June. By this time, the water in the sea has already warmed up sufficiently. True, it is not the same everywhere. For example, in Halkidiki (northern Greece) the average temperature in June will be approximately +20C, and in Crete (the southernmost island of Greece) it will already be a couple of degrees higher, i.e. somewhere around +23-24C. Of course, it doesn’t happen once at a time. However, since mid-June, every day the water along the entire Greek coast becomes warmer and warmer, attracting masses of tourists. In this case, the air temperature can reach +35C. If you are a heat-loving plant, then in June it is better for you to go swimming on the island. Crete, o. Corfu, o. or o. Kos. Only Corfu has a more humid climate, unlike Crete. In Crete, although it is hot, it is dry and there is always a refreshing breeze.

The most comfortable time for swimming in northern Greece is from mid-June. However, some people enjoy water procedures even at +19C. The swimming season in Greece lasts until early to mid-October. At this time, the water temperature can be +22-24C degrees, but the weather is already autumn. It begins to rain, and in the evenings without a warm jacket it is already quite cool and the cold wind will not bring joy.
Holidays in Greece are not only about the beach, but also about an amazing journey along the coast by car , then anywhere along the coast you will find cozy sandy beaches with clear water and a gentle entry into the water. You can really swim wherever you like.

Cozy Greek beaches. The view is simply amazing.

The island of Crete is the most popular and holiday destination in Greece. However, a characteristic feature of the island is the almost constant presence of waves. Crete is located on the open sea and the sea winds just drive the waves. With the exception of some individual coves, which are protected from the wind. These are places like Elounda or Bali.
Some inconvenience on Greek beaches when entering the sea in some places can be caused by a 2-3 meter stone slab that stretches along the entire coast. In such cases, it is convenient to use rubber slippers, which can be purchased in any resort town. But you can do it without slippers. This plate becomes an obstacle only when the sea is very rough. On calm days, when there are no waves at sea, you will calmly cross it and be able to swim without paying attention to this natural obstacle.

This very slab is visible in the photo.

Basically, all beaches in Greece are sandy and have a gentle entrance. The water, as a rule, is clean and transparent. Spiny sea urchins, which many have probably heard about, are found only among rocks and stones. You should not swim in these places, because... pricking a hedgehog with a needle will bring you a lot of inconvenience. In Greece, all beaches belong to the state and you will not find fences or private areas anywhere. You can swim absolutely anywhere.
The island part of Greece is no less interesting. Holidays on the islands invite you to a calm, measured holiday in silence and among picturesque surroundings. On the islands you can go fishing, diving or spend unforgettable hours on a yacht. The most visited Greek islands are Aegina, Poros and Euboea. From Athens, from the port of Pereas, you can reach them in a few hours by boat. And the famous purely Greek island with white houses, blue shutters and doors and mills is the hallmark of Greece. We are talking about an island.

The most beautiful beach in Greece. Myrtos beach in Kefalonia

The most picturesque and green place in Greece is considered to be the Chalkidiki Peninsula, which consists of three small peninsulas, popularly called “fingers”. In Halkidiki, Greeks prefer to have their own dachas and country houses and come here for a weekend getaway or after the end of the tourist season. The most picturesque peninsula in Halkidiki is Sithonia. There are many pine groves and forests, cozy bays and magnificent sandy beaches. There are practically no noisy and party places in Sithonia. Discos and crazy parties at hotels are rare. By the way, the main difference between Greece and, for example, Turkey is a calmer holiday without animation, focused more on creation than on fun. Of course, in Greece there are hotels similar to Turkish ones, but there are much fewer of them. In addition to the above, 3*** hotels in Greece can sometimes be easily compared to 4 or 5 stars in Egypt or Turkey. Also, in my opinion, most Greek hotels are not so pretentious and fashionable. They are most likely more peaceful. Simple and tasteful, in keeping with national traditions: white and blue.

Greek resort village.

It is very convenient to travel around Greece with a rented car. Unlike other European countries, renting a car in Greece is much easier, especially on the islands. You will not be required to have an IDP (international driver's license) and will not be blocked for a certain amount on the card, as happens, for example, in France or Italy. Read how to rent a car in Greece here. At the same time, Greece has excellent roads, fairly calm traffic and loyal police officers. Traveling by car around Greece will give you nothing but pleasure. Traffic jams sometimes occur at the end of the week, when locals flock to the weekend, and in large cities, for example, in Athens.
Anyone who comes to Greece for the first time simply needs to get acquainted with the local cuisine. I’ll say right away that seafood in Greece is expensive. It's hard to say why this is so. But meat and vegetables are available in any tavern and are not that expensive. The most popular Greek dishes are moussaka (eggplant baked with minced lamb), saganaki - fried cheese, souvlaki (kebab), fried octopus, Greek salad and much, much more. Local olives, unlike our Russian ones (which are sold in stores), are all salted, without concentrates, and are very healthy. Don't miss your chance to devour pistachios. Greek pistachios are the most delicious. Also surprisingly tasty local “kozinaki”. As for drinks, you should try the traditional “” (wine with a tar flavor), local grape vodka “raki”, and aniseed vodka “ouzo”. The latter, well, is very much for everyone, the taste is very special. And, of course, the famous Greek cognac Metaxa. In Greece, the cuisine is so diverse that it is possible to list only the most common and popular dishes. The rest is up to you on the spot. On average, lunch in Greece will cost one person about 15-20 euros with wine or beer. By the way, many taverns have so-called homemade wine. You just need to ask the waiter. In Greece, you are allowed to produce and sell your own homemade wine. There is a wonderful drink called “rakomelo”. This is local grape vodka infused with honey. As souvenirs from Greece, tourists bring olive oil, aromatic soap, cosmetics, all kinds of dishes and much more.

Santorini

And this is Santorini

I know many tourists who come to Greece on vacation who try to book hotels with only breakfast or breakfast-dinner. They prefer to dine in local taverns. In terms of money, it turns out to be almost the same, but you will probably get a lot of pleasure, become a connoisseur of Greek cuisine and perhaps gain a little weight. - it's all natural and freshly prepared. And getting poisoned in Greece with food that is not fresh sounds like nonsense.
Recently, the tourism business in Greece has been increasingly focused on Russian-speaking tourists. Many shops and taverns are already trying not to hire staff without knowledge of the Russian language. When you enter the store, they will immediately greet you in Russian. It remains a mystery to me how they determine nationality. And since 2011, the Greek embassy began issuing multiple visas to our tourists for six months and a year, which has never happened before.
If, when visiting Greece, you are interested in getting acquainted with ancient Greek history, then it is better to settle somewhere on the mainland of the country, more precisely on the Peloponnese Peninsula. From here it is very close to all the main Greek attractions in any direction. You can book excursions, or you can travel on your own in a rented car or public transport.
How do you choose? suitable hotel and how to understand his stardom? We do it this way. To begin with, we determine our priorities, what is more important to us, the beach or the “excursion” or both. If we go in the summer, then naturally the beach will come first. If it’s the off-season, then we’re looking for a new place from which it’s most convenient to travel. Those. the presence of public transport stops and, in fact, the attractions themselves. When choosing a hotel with a preference for a beach holiday, we try to ensure that it is located near a small town, so that in the evenings you can go for a walk, drink a cup of coffee or go shopping. We try not to stop in the city itself, just like on the outskirts or on the edge of civilization. Using an interactive map (mostly Google Planet), we see which terrain predominates in the selected area: rocky, flat, open sea or bays. All this can be seen on the interactive map. Then we choose a hotel. Please pay attention to paid or free air conditioning in the rooms, paid or not umbrellas and sun loungers near the pool. We never use sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach; we always take an umbrella with us, and instead of sunbeds we buy straw mats. This is convenient because when traveling by car we can get comfortable in any place we like. Then we clarify whether drinks are paid at dinner if we take a hotel without all-inclusive. If you are going to rent a car, you need to check the availability of free parking near the hotel. Well, and of course we read reviews about hotels. If more than half are positive, then we consider that the hotel is suitable for us.
In Greece at the beginning of summer, especially on the islands, you may be bitten by mosquitoes. Therefore, it is better to take fumitox with you or buy anti-mosquito ointment at the pharmacy on the spot. Such drugs in Greece are of higher quality than our domestic ones and are made from natural products, not chemical ones.

Have a nice holiday! I will be happy to answer your questions.

The list of holiday islands in Greece, where excellent seascapes are combined with ancient ancient artifacts, includes more than 100 items.

Tourists planning a trip may find this checklist useful:

  1. Season. The optimal period for a beach holiday is from May to September. Comfortable air and sea temperatures will allow you to combine sea swimming with an excursion program. In autumn-winter, the mild climate and temperature within +10...+14°C give tourists the opportunity to take long walks.
  2. Place. Upon arrival in Greece, a map with islands in Russian will help the tourist plan a route in such a way as to stop at one, but also visit other interesting places around.
  3. Housing. When choosing it, you can focus not only on hotels and resorts that offer full board, but also on private apartments in small villages, thanks to which you can better feel the atmosphere of the ancient country. It is better to book this option in advance.
  4. Visa. To visit Greece you need a visa, but you can only choose those resorts where entry permission is issued on the spot.
  5. Religion. If the trip is not undertaken for the purpose of pilgrimage, it is better to avoid major religious holidays, during which access for tourists to many attractions is limited. Women are advised to take a scarf or headscarf on their heads when traveling so they can visit churches.

How to get to the islands of Greece?

Direct flights from Moscow are available in the summer to Crete or all year round to major cities (Athens or Thessaloniki). From them, tourists go on vacation on domestic flights. The best price for tickets is in November.
List of airlines: Aegean Airlines, Ellinair, Aeroflot, UTair.

By adjusting the duration of connections between flights, you can have time to see the mainland attractions of the country. Flights with connections in European cities are possible.

The most picturesque islands

If, when choosing a destination to go on vacation, a tourist gives preference to beautiful landscapes, in Greece it is better to stay in Santorini or Skiathos. Although literally every corner of this country can compete for the title of the most picturesque.

Santorini

It is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece due to its interesting landscapes: the rocks are dotted with small cloudy white houses with azure roofs. Nearby are small temples with blue domes. You can appreciate the landscape by taking a boat trip on a ferry or yacht.

Despite the lack of fresh water, local residents grow fruits and vegetables, and vineyards and eucalyptus groves cover much of the land. Therefore, relaxation will take place among flowers and greenery.

The beaches of Santorini are impressive with black or red sand, the best of them being Perissa and Kamari.

Fans of archeology will be able to see architectural monuments of the Cycladic civilization on the island and visit the excavations of the ancient city of Thera (9th century BC) in the east. Here you can see the ruins of old Roman baths, theaters, markets, visit an 18th-century monastery, an archaeological museum, the monastery of the Prophet Elijah and the convent of St. Nicholas.

Skiathos

Monuments of ancient culture are located here along the entire coast, and the combination of interesting cuisine with seascapes and excellent beaches, of which there are more than 60, will suit visitors with different interests.

Skiathos is an island for active tourists: lovers of yachting, jet skis, parachutists. There are also attractions on Skiathos: the ruins of Kastro, the Venetian fortress of Bourtzi, the monasteries of Our Lady and Evangelistria. The latter are producers of local specialties. You can not only taste or purchase cheese, olive oil, wine, and liqueurs, but also try to make it yourself.

The best Greek islands for a beach holiday with children or couples

Resorts in Greece with sandy beaches and a mild climate are what you need for a holiday with children or a couple. And Crete is the eighth largest island in Europe and the largest island of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea, and it will introduce tourists to the world of Greek mythology.

Evia

Evia, located in the Northern Sporades archipelago, is best for travelers with children or small, quiet groups.

According to legend, the campaign against Troy began from here, and Hercules himself treated himself to mineral waters. This amazing climatic zone combines a centuries-old pine forest, sea beaches bordered by powerful rocks, healing mud, and hot springs among mountain gorges.

At the same time, the proximity to the mainland (only 80 km to Athens, there is even a 14-kilometer bridge across the Euripus Strait) makes the most intense excursion program possible.

Crete

The sandy beaches of Crete are especially good for families with children or couples in September, when the velvet season begins on the Greek islands. Although the mild climate and beautiful nature make sea swimming possible here already at the end of April.
Crete is an amazing place where all the ancient myths seem to come to life against the backdrop of the mesmerizingly beautiful local landscapes. This is the historical and cultural center of the ancient Cretan civilization, rich in ancient monuments.

Here King Minos kept the Minotaur in his palace called the Labyrinth. And in our time, visiting the Knossos Palace made of different types of stone in Heraklion will bring pleasure to tourists of any age. The first use of water supply, sewerage, ventilation, and heating is associated with its construction.

For children, Crete offers 4 water parks, a large CretAquarium aquarium and a wonderful family park “Labyrinth” with attractions.

The most frequently visited island among tourists among the Ionian Islands in the west of the country. The nature reserve attracts people from all over the world with its olive groves, citrus orchards, and lush greenery. Corfu is famous for its quality service and attracts many tourists during the season, which is worth considering when planning your trip.

When wondering which Greek resort to choose for a holiday with children, in Corfu, take a closer look at the cities of Moraitika and Messonghi - there are long sandy beaches with a smooth descent to the sea.

History buffs will be able to ride along the Lovers' Canal in Sidara, see the Byzantine churches in Kerkyra, and in the Old Town visit the royal palace, Empire style houses, and an ancient Venetian fort.

Belongs to the Greek Dodecanese archipelago and attracts many tourists. Hotels, bars, and restaurants are concentrated here. Teenage children and young people will appreciate the party atmosphere of the central areas. The island's beaches are shallow, safe, sandy places for the whole family.

The islanders respect medicine, because Hippocrates was born here. Therefore, tourists who are interested in medicine choose a holiday in this place among all the islands of Greece. Children will be interested in looking at the thousand-year-old plane tree, which, according to legend, was planted by Hippocrates in his youth, or taking part in the traditional oath ceremony for future doctors.

Water parks Aquis Marine Resort, Lido Water Park, Go Kart karting centers, Baywatch water sports club - the choice of sports guys and young couples for a vacation on Kos. And very young travelers can interact with animals in the Physiko Parco tis Zias nature reserve.

Go to Zakynthos if you are thinking about which Greek island to choose for an eventful children's vacation at the sea or a relaxing holiday for two. There are fewer tourists here than in other Greek resorts, which guarantees a measured pace of vacation.

The southernmost of the seven Ionian islands will offer visitors not only 123 km of comfortable pebble and sandy beaches, beautiful azure bays with grottoes and green gardens, but also a large list of hotels. In the south and southeast of Zakynthos there is a marine reserve with rare animals such as the caretta turtle and the monachus seal.

The island's landscapes are exquisitely complemented by Venetian towers and fortresses; the capital has a similar Venetian St. Mark's Square with a Catholic Cathedral.

A place that preserves national flavor and ancient buildings. Perfect for a couple's walk after relaxing on Myrtos Beach, during which you can see such attractions as:

  • Drogarati cave - with a “front” hall decorated with “chandeliers” made of hundreds of stalactites;
  • the mystical underground Lake Melissani, discovered after the ceiling of his cave collapsed, allowing sunlight to penetrate here;
  • the Venetian town of Fiscardo, the only one that did not suffer from the terrible earthquake and therefore preserved its historical appearance.

Islands for young people and couples

Tourists call Rhodes among the most romantic holiday destinations, and young people will appreciate the nightlife of fashionable Mykonos.

An important tourism center off the coast of Turkey. European tourists consider Rhodes the best resort in Greece. According to legend, Zeus raised it from the bottom of the sea as a gift to the sun god Helios.

Rhodes has a variety of hotels and beaches: there are small hotels for couples looking for privacy, as well as chain hotels with night discos and round-the-clock parties for dance lovers.

At the same time, the island is also attractive for visitors who are interested in archeology and the ancient world. The list of places to visit should include the ruins of ancient Kameiros, the Rhodes Fortress, the castles of Archangelos and Monolithos.
Lovers in spring or summer should visit the Valley of Butterflies.

Located in the Aegean Sea, it is the center of Greek nightlife. The resort for wealthy tourists, including world stars, is famous for its tolerance to the whims of its guests. This is a place of entertainment, in a relaxed atmosphere where you can choose daily pleasures according to your mood: a party on the best beaches, shopping in stores of world fashion brands, a quiet beach holiday, watching the sunrise on a yacht, surfing, a Greek dinner under the stars.

Many of Symi's sandy or pebble beaches are located in such a way that they can only be reached by sea. This attracts lovers to the island, who can spend a vacation here together, away from other tourists.
Interesting Greek architecture and seascapes will be a good backdrop for photographs.

Ideal places for a secluded holiday with an authentic atmosphere

Small, sparsely populated Greek islands give travelers the opportunity to experience all the traditions of the region in their original form. For many, such a vacation is preferable to five-star service.

It is famous for its coastline, along which sandy or sand-pebble beaches stretch. Here you can choose a swimming place to suit your taste: from an organized one with bars and restaurants on the shore to a sports one, offering various types of water sports. Lovers of “wild” holidays will also find beaches here for themselves.

Chios

The island offers a secluded getaway. There are fewer tourists here than in other Greek resorts. The beaches of Chios are the spacious black-pebble Mavra Volia Beach, the small Vroulidia Beach, consisting of a mixture of pebbles and sand. The sandy beaches of Komi and Karfas, ideal for children, are worthy of attention.

Ancient Orthodox shrines (the monasteries of Nea Moni, Ayia Markela and Agios Konstantinos) will be an interesting addition to your holiday. You can feel the closeness to Turkey by visiting the capital and visiting the 10th-century fortifications with Turkish baths and the Byzantine museum located in an old mosque.

Lefkada

The island is located in the Ionian Sea. It is connected to the mainland by a pontoon bridge, which gives tourists the additional advantage of not being subject to the vagaries of nature and enjoying the scenery almost all year round. Lefkada has a mountainous landscape and lush green surroundings.

The island is a center for water sports. Kitesurfers, divers, and windsurfers feel great here. In summer, lovers of an authentic atmosphere can take part in a large folklore festival.

May? Those who come to the sea with children stay at the resorts of Crete or Rhodes. The sea is warmer there.

IN June many tourists gather in Greek resorts, and in July And August The beaches are getting really crowded. At the height of the summer season, the air temperature rises above +33...+35°C. The sea is very warm +25…+27°С. Not everyone can withstand the intense heat, so parents with children and elderly tourists plan a seaside holiday in Greece in spring, early summer or autumn.

If you have not decided where it is better to relax in Greece in September, choose any place you like. Velvet season is beautiful everywhere! There is no extreme heat in autumn. The heated sea cools slowly. In September the water is warm +24°C. The swimming season ends only at the end October.

“Recommend the most party-loving Greek resort.” “Where are the best children's hotels with a tennis school?” “I want to go to a resort with the best beaches in the country.” “Which hotel will accept pets?” Together with specialists from the Greek tour operator Mouzenidis Travel, we analyze the most popular, not the most popular and completely unpopular requests from tourists for holidays in Greece.

“Greece has everything,” Anton Chekhov wrote in his works. And he was more than right! Whatever your soul desires, everything will be found in the land of the Hellenes. Noisy youth hotels and quiet green villages, cell rooms in monasteries for pilgrims and two-story nightclubs. There is an answer to any of your queries here. The main thing is to ask a question to a good specialist. Today we address your questions to professionals who have been organizing holidays at the resorts of Greece for 20 years, having thoroughly studied each of its different, but so beautiful regions in their own way.

Where can you have a fun holiday in Greece? Where should a large youth group go?

The most party resorts in Greece are easy to recognize - from English tourists. They are the wildest partygoers, especially fond of such cities as Kavos, Gouvia and Ipsos in Corfu, Laganas in Zakynthos. Foam parties, two-story clubs, dances with paints, night festivities - don’t even think about falling asleep if you live somewhere near the party center. And they don’t come here to sleep! A special place is the island of Kameo, connected to Zakynthos by a bridge. This is a separate island with clubs, bars and parties. And this is exactly the kind of rest after which you will need... more rest.

Where is the best place to go on holiday with children?

Greece is a country ideal for family holidays. And the best choice for a trip with kids is the Halkidiki Peninsula. This is the closest region - during a 2-hour flight from Minsk to Thessaloniki, children do not have time to get tired or bored of passengers. This is the northernmost region with coniferous forests, thanks to which there is a pleasant climate and healing resinous air. And the beaches of Halkidiki are sandy, with a gentle entrance to the sea, one of the best equipped for children's recreation.

The Greeks love children very much, and hotels in Greece not only accept children under 12 years old (and some up to 14 and even 15 years old) for free, but many of them offer developmental programs for kids, interest clubs, master classes, sports sections, children's food in hotel restaurants and equipment for babies. .

We would like to give a gift to retired parents - a tour to Greece. Where to send them without tedious transfers and in a comfortable language environment?

The most suitable option for tourists of elegant age would be the Halkidiki peninsula - a quick flight, a short transfer to the hotel, a comfortable climate in Northern Greece without dry air and sweltering heat. In addition, many Russian-speaking Greeks live in this region, who at one time received their education in the USSR and returned to their homeland. In this part of Greece, your parents will have virtually no language problems. Another advantage of the region is low prices, compared to the rest of Greece, especially for fresh vegetables and fruits. Almost all crops are grown here, which means that their price does not include the cost of transportation. And for those who want to combine a seaside holiday with visiting as many excursions as possible, the Olympic Riviera region will be the best option.

“Whatever stick you stick into this soil, it will turn green and begin to grow,” this is what the Greeks say about the fertility of the soil on the island of Corfu, and in general about its climate. Today this island is the greenest island in Greece and gives a head start to any of the regions in terms of the number of olive groves. Real olive groves with trees several human heights. For this it is worth saying thanks to the Venetians - during their rule, they paid the Greeks extra for every olive tree they planted. The beauty of the island inspired not only artists, but also writers. To see this, read Gerald Durrell's story "My Family and Other Animals." Read and go to Corfu - here your city stress will be relieved.
