In this article, I collected all the available information on how to get from Bangkok to the island, plus I described my own experience.
An important point to consider first is that the last ferry to Koh Chang leaves at 19:00. The first ferry leaves at 6 am.
There are several ways to get to Koh Chang:
1) From the Ekkamai East Bus Terminal (Ekkamai Bus Terminal, on Sukhumwit Road), which is located at the metro station of the same name, a 5-minute walk.
There are two types of buses departing from here:
— Which go directly to the Laem Ngop pier, from where ferries sail to Koh Chang. These buses only run in the morning, at 7:45, 8:45 and 9:45. Travel time: 6 hours, not including ferry. Price 275 baht per person.
— Which go to the city of Trat (at Trat Bus Terminal) in the province of the same name, which includes Koh Chang. There you need to take a songthaew and for 50 baht it takes 30 minutes to get to the pier. There are two disadvantages here: firstly, going to songthaew is hellishly stuffy, and secondly, if there are not enough people, you will have to wait a long time for them to be filled, or pay 300 baht. These buses run every hour between 4am and 11pm. Travel time: 6 hours, not including ferry. The same price.
2) From Morchit Bus Terminal on Kamphaeng Phet Road, located at Morchit MRT Station. It is near Don Mueang airport. From the airport to Morchit metro station go public buses, cost 30 baht per person, travel about 20 minutes. There are no buses from here directly to Laem Ngop, and buses to Trat depart much less frequently than from the Ekkamai bass terminal - at 08:30, 09:30, 12:30, 15: 30, 17:30, 23:00. Travel time is also 6 hours, price 270 baht. There are also minivans running from the Morchit bass terminal to Trat starting at 05:00. They travel faster, 4 hours, fare 250 baht.
3) From Suvarnabhumi Airport. Bus No. 999 stops at the bass terminal next to it, going from Ekkamai Bass Terminal directly to Laem Ngop Pier. There are free shuttle buses that go to this place.
There is no transport from Don Mueang Airport to Koh Chang - neither to Laem Ngop, nor to Trat, they only offer taxi services at unrealistic prices. You can also take bus No. 392 from Suvarnabhumi to Laem Ngop Pier (at 7:30 am), but they only run during high season, i.e. from October to May. Also on the ground floor of Suvarnabhumi Airport, next to exit 8, they sell tickets for minivans directly to Koh Chang, they cost 600 baht one way or 800 baht round trip, on Koh Chang they will take you to the place/beach of your choice. These minivans depart at 7:40, 11:00 and 14:00.
4) From the street/area Khao San Road. This is convenient only for those who are staying in this particular area, otherwise there is no point in going from here. A minibus ticket to Koh Chang and straight to the ferry can be bought at small travel agencies, of which there are a lot on Khao San Road. It is better to buy tickets to Koh Chang here in advance, the day before the trip.
5) From Victory Monument metro station. But it’s worth going from here to Koh Chang, as in the previous case, if you are staying somewhere nearby.
6) By plane from Bangkok to Trat. For example, Bangkok Air, which flies in this direction 3 times a day - at 8:40, 10:30 and 17:05. Flight time is only one hour. You can get from the airport to Laem Ngop Pier by taxi or minivan. The price is from 100 baht and above, it depends on whether you are going only to the pier or directly to the hotel on Koh Chang.
We used the first method. It took us 20 minutes to get from our hotel to the Ekkamai terminal by taxi (93 baht), and we got there at about half past 9. Bus No. 999 to Koh Chang departed at 8:45 and at 9:45, so we took the nearest one without any expectations. There weren’t many empty seats left, literally about 5. The ticket cost 275 baht per person. When purchasing a ticket, you choose your seat on the bus. 
As it turned out, it is better to choose a place away from the toilet, i.e. from the back of the bus, because It smelled like hell when someone opened the door. Immediately upon departure, everyone was given a box of cupcakes and a glass of water. The bus is very comfortable, good, except that the smelly toilet sometimes spoils the air.

At 9:15 our bus stopped at the bus terminal of Suvarnabhumi Airport, where several more people boarded.
After two hours, the bus made a 15-minute stop for the toilet and food/drink. Then we drove on, and halfway through the journey the bus broke down. We waited for 20-30 minutes in some cafe, after which another bus arrived, which turned out to be much worse than the previous one, mainly because it was hellishly stuffy inside.
It was only at 15:40 that we arrived at the Laem Ngop pier. More precisely, not to the pier itself, but to the counter for purchasing ferry tickets. A one-way ticket costs 80 baht, a round-trip ticket with an open date costs 140 baht. We took a round trip ticket. The main thing is not to lose it in a whole month! 
Bus schedule returning from Laem Ngop to Bangkok. To catch the 2-hour bus, you need to take the ferry to Koh Chang at 12 o'clock, which means take a tuk-tuk from your hotel (from Lonely Beach or White Sand Beach) at 11. 
The Thais said to wait a little, about 10 minutes, and free taxis would come and take us to the pier. But it turned out to be only 200 meters to go there and we all went on foot. The line for cars on the ferry was long... it was so scary. I immediately remembered a trip to Olkhon Island in Irkutsk. 
And the ferry to Koh Chang is about the same as Davao-Samal. 
By the way, Laem Ngop Pier means two piers - Koh Chang Ferry Pier and Center Point Ferry Pier. Buses bring you to one pier and then to another. We sailed from Center Point Ferry Pier. Travel time: 45 minutes. It makes no difference which pier the bus takes you to, so you shouldn’t even find out in advance.
Here is Koh Chang itself. Just a jungle! The island is developed only off the coast, and even then only from the western part. 
Next, when you sail to Koh Chang, you can get to your chosen hotel or beach by tuk-tuks (also called songthaews or pickups) with the sign taxi. If you have not yet chosen a hotel or beach, then stay at White Sand Beach, because... there is a lot of inexpensive housing there, and everything you need is nearby, then you can find some other housing if you want. You can also stop temporarily at Lonely Beach, but from there you go further to buy fruit and it’s not as beautiful and cozy as White Sand Beach.
Tuk-tuk prices to Koh Chang beaches:
— Baan Khlong Son - 30 baht per person.
— White Sand Beach - 50 baht per person.
— Khlong Prao Beach - 60 baht per person.
— Kai Bae Beach - 80 baht per person.
— Lonely Beach - 100 baht per person.
— Bai Lan Beach - 120 baht per person.
— Baan Bang Bao - 150 baht per person. 
We arrived at Lonely Beach. Of all our tuk-tuk, which was packed with 15-16 people, only a few people went to White Sand Beach, the rest went to Lonely Beach. But the name of this beach should apparently be written in quotation marks, because it’s quite noisy here... 
On Koh Chang it is not a problem to find inexpensive housing, for 400-500 baht per day. With normal internet and a decent toilet. But it’s not a fact that it will be a quiet place... 
Koh Chang Island – popular resort in Thailand, located approximately 315 km southeast of Bangkok. Despite the fact that package tourists, who are brought in batches from Pattaya, like to relax here, the island of Koh Chang is also very popular among independent travelers.
How to get to Koh Chang from Bangkok on your own? What are the ways? How long will it take to travel, what is the cost? I will answer these questions in this article.
2. You can also go directly from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Koh Chang. on a minibus from the same company bussuvarnabhumikohchang.com/lonely-beach-express-bus.html. The minibus departs from Bangkok Airport to 9:30, 11:00 and 14:00 and will take you directly to Lonely Beach on Koh Chang. In the opposite direction, minibuses are sent to 7:00, 9:00, 17:00 and 19:00. Total time the journey from the airport to the beach on Chang is 6-7 hours. The fare is 600 baht one way and 900 baht round trip.
Tickets cannot be booked in advance! Tickets for the minibus can be purchased at the airport on the ground floor near gate No. 8.
3. Another way to go towards Koh Chang from the airport, or rather from Airport bus station Bus Terminal Suvarnabhumi International Airport - take one of the passing buses who are heading to Trat from northern bus station Mo Chit (they all stop at the airport bus station) or Government Bus 999, which departs from Ekkamai directly to Laemngop Pier.
See the bus schedule from the bus stations above and add about half an hour to an hour for the journey from the bus stations to the airport. The bus fare is 265 – 275 baht.
There are free buses running all the way to the airport bus station - white shuttle buses.
By taxi, hotel transfer, rented car in Koh Chang
If your finances allow you, or you are in a hurry, or traveling with children, or a large group, you can get to Koh Chang by taxi or order a transfer at the hotel in advance.
You can take a taxi at the airport or arrange it on the street or at your hotel in Bangkok. The cost of a taxi to the ferry is 2500-3500 baht, to the hotel on Koh Chang 4000-6000 baht (the taxi is loaded onto the ferry with you). This is the price for a standard car that can fit 3 people. For a large company you will have to order a minivan. Transfer from the hotel usually costs more - 5,000 - 10,000 baht.
Travel time to the pier is 3 – 4 hours, to the hotel on Chang is about 5 hours.
- You can rent a car (we use this most often) and go by car to Koh Chang. There are two roads from Bangkok to the piers - both 310 km long. You can leave Bangkok
- along Highway 3, then turn onto Highway 344, and after passing Ban Bung turn again onto Highway 3
along the road which is an extension of Rama IX, Srinikarin road. This road connects to Highway 344, which must be followed to Trat as described above.
By plane from Bangkok to Koh Chang You cannot fly to Koh Chang Island itself by plane, you can fly to Trat airport . Currently, only one airline flies to Trat, Bangkok Air. On this moment it makes 3 flights a day from Bangkok: 8:20, 11:40, 17:00. From Trat to Bangkok at 10:00, 13:00 and 18:30. The flight time is only 1 hour, the cost of a one-way ticket is from 2650 baht.

From Trat Airport you can take a taxi to or from the pier and then take a ferry or taxi directly to your hotel on Koh Chang. A taxi directly to the hotel on Koh Chang will cost about 1,500 – 2,000 baht.
You can also take advantage of a group transfer from Trat airport to the island for 400-600 baht per person.
How to get from Trat bus station to the ferry to Koh Chang
Most buses do not arrive directly at the pier, but at the Trat bus station, which is 1 km from the city. There you will already be met by local minibuses - taxis (songthaew), which for 70 baht will take you to one of the piers.
If you need a specific pier, then tell the driver about it. We were taken to Center Point Pier. It is from here that the first ferry to the island departs at 6 am. 
Sometimes the bus going to the bus station in Trat makes a stop on the highway and drops off those going to Koh Chang. There, those wishing to go to the island are already met by minibuses and taken to the pier. From this place it’s closer to go not to Center Point Pier, but to Koh Chang Ferry Pier. In this case, you will get to Koh Chang faster than if you go to the bus station.
Ferries to Koh Chang
Ferries to Koh Chang depart from two piers on the mainland

Ferries run from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm every 30 minutes. Travel time is half an hour. The cost is 80 baht per person one way and 120 baht round trip. 200 baht per car round trip.
- Center Point Ferry Pier– located 20 km from Trat (30 minutes journey). Ferries run from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays until 9:00 p.m. Depart every hour. Travel time is 50-60 minutes. The cost is 80 baht per person one way and 120 baht round trip. The car is free.
This is what the ferry to Koh Chang looks like We were brought to Center Point Ferry Pier, since the ferry to the island departed from it earlier. We arrived half an hour before departure and watched as cars drove onto the ferry, as it began to get light and the sun rose. For us, who have difficulty getting up in the morning, seeing the dawn is a very unusual thing :)
On the ferry, there is space for cars and bikes at the bottom, and seats for passengers on the second level. There is also a mini store here - you can buy something to eat, drink tea or coffee.
Ferry to Koh Chang - plenty of seating and a small mini shop/cafe 
Ferry to Koh Chang - very few people - 60-80 baht per person Please note that until the minibus is full of passengers (8-12 people), the pickup will not depart (it will either wait for the next ferry or go to the next pier to look for passengers), so hurry up to take seats in the departing pickups!
You can also rent a bike near the piers (from 150 baht per day) and use it to go to the hotel. This option is suitable for those who have few things and those who are good at driving a bike, because the roads on Koh Chang are very dangerous (there will be a separate article about this). While we were driving in a pickup truck to the hotel, I was horrified to think how we would ride a bike around the island. But then I got used to the steep ascents and descents :)
If you arrive in Bangkok in the morning, you can easily get to the island on the same day. If you arrive in Bangkok after 14:00, there is very little chance of getting to Koh Chang on the same day (you may be able to quickly get there by taxi, but you may also get stuck in a traffic jam leaving the city). In this case, it’s better (you can choose a hotel) or, at worst, in Trat (you can book a hotel in advance).
Where is it better to stay overnight in Bangkok or Trat? If you are in a hurry to get to the island, it is better to spend the night in Trat and take the first ferry to Koh Chang. But it seems to me that you can spend much more interesting time in Bangkok, for example, go for an evening walk on Khao San Road or look at the city from the height of the tower :)
The night bus ride was difficult for us. More precisely: the ride was not at all difficult, and even interesting, although I did not manage to fall asleep. But upon arrival in Koh Chang, fatigue and lack of sleep made themselves felt. After checking into the hotel, we tried to sunbathe near the pool, but then decided to go to our room to sleep for a couple of hours and slept all day! So if someone values precious vacation days, it’s better to spend the night in Bangkok or Trat and then go to the island :)
The cost of the road from Bangkok to the hotel on Lonely Beach on Koh Chang cost us: 265 baht + 70 baht + 80 baht + 100 baht = 515 baht per person(not including a taxi from the hotel in Bangkok to the Ekamai bus station - 100 baht for two).
We left Bangkok at 23:30, we were at the hotel at 7:30 in the morning, i.e. the journey took 8 hours.

Chang primarily attracts lovers of pristine nature. The island is part of a marine reserve, so not only holidays in hotels, but also excursions to local beauty are very popular. You can get to the island on any budget - fortunately, there are many options on how to do this. However, you can’t do without a ferry crossing here: after all, it’s an island.
You can get directly to Koh Chang, or you can first get to the Laem Ngop pier, from which ferries depart to the island. The first option is more convenient, but also more expensive, since the ferry crossing in this case is already included in the ticket price. It will be cheaper to split the trip into two parts by driving to the pier and buying a ferry ticket yourself.
Bangkok - pier
The end point of most routes is not the pier itself, but the city of Trat, which is 20 km away. Next, you need to transfer to a local minibus, called a songthaew, which will take you to the ferry crossing. Some buses even drop off passengers on the highway, where they are picked up by the same songthaew and taken to the pier. Including transfers, travel time is about 6 hours.
The beginning of this journey can begin from several points:
- Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. A free shuttle bus from the capital's airport will take you to bus station Airport Bus Terminal Suvarnabhumi International Airport, where you will need to change to a local regular bus. In high season, it is still better to get to one of the two city bus stations where these buses start, since by the time they arrive at the stop there may be no more seats left.
- East Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) is the most convenient of Bangkok's bus terminals. It is located near the Ekkamai (เอกมัย) metro station and buses leave for Trat every half hour.
- The Northern Bus Terminal (MoChit) is convenient for those flying into Don Mueang Airport, located nearby.
- Victory Monument metro station in the city center. From here, minibuses depart quite frequently to the pier. From Suvarnabhumi Airport, where most Russian flights land, Victory Monument can be reached in 40 minutes.
- Trat can also be reached by plane. Flights are operated from Suvarnabhumi airport and only by Bangkok Air, so ticket prices are quite high. The flight will take 1 hour, then you need to transfer to a minibus, minibus or taxi and in 30 minutes. get to the pier.
Bangkok - Koh Chang
“Direct” routes to the island from Bangkok start mainly from the Ekkamai bus station; the same buses and minibuses can be intercepted at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
- Bus No. 392 departs on a “direct” journey around 7 am, stopping at Suvarnabhumi Airport, then Pattaya, Rayong and Trat. Then tourists transfer to the ferry and travel to Koh Chang. The entire journey will take approximately 7-8 hours.
- Minibuses will be a good alternative for those who missed the morning bus. In addition, along the way they only stop at gas stations as needed and continue to Lonely Beach on Koh Chang. You can buy a ticket for the minibus directly at the airport, at gate No. 8 on the first floor.
- A taxi to Koh Chang will cost more than a plane ticket to Trat, however, this type of transport deserves mention in our review.
Those staying in Bangkok itself can book a transfer to Koh Chang at their hotel. This is the most expensive option. A trip on a minibus purchased from one of the agencies in the tourist area of Khao San Road will cost a little less. The end point of such a trip can be either a pier or a specific hotel or beach on Koh Chang. The demand for such tours is very high, so it is better to buy them in advance.
Pattaya - Koh Chang
There are slightly fewer options for getting to the island from Pattaya than in the capital. The most convenient of them is a transfer from the hotel to the Laem Ngop pier or the hotel on Koh Chang. This trip will take place by minibus and will last 3.5-4 hours to the pier.
The cheapest and most difficult way to get to the island is to catch a bus to Trat. You need to catch it around 6 or 11:20 a.m. at a stop located at the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Central Pattaya Road. Then you will have to transfer to a pickup minibus in Trat, get to the pier, take the ferry and finally end up on Koh Chang. Travel time to Trat will be about 6-6.5 hours.
