What hotels in Tossa de Mar have nice views? Tossa de Mar is a great place for a family holiday. Tossa de Mar Spain attractions map.

This time we are exploring the city of Tossa de Mar (Spain). The sights of this place will surprise even the most seasoned tourists.

Vila Vella Fortress

It was built about 1000 years ago, and it is almost the most old building countries. Throughout its existence, the fortress has been under the care of the church, protecting the monastery from worldly vanity. The fact is that the part of the town where Vila Vella is located belonged to the church in 1989 and was a place of pilgrimage. In the Middle Ages, walls served as protection from pirate attacks. Since those times, a lot of events have passed and time has passed, the castle has turned into ruins.

Two centuries after the construction of Vila Vella, a reconstruction took place that returned the fortress to its original appearance. But she is far from the last. The territory of Vila Vella is surrounded by ramparts. Four large and three small round towers are located behind the wall. The art museum is located in one of them.

Ava Gardner statue

The statue of famous Hollywood actress Ava Gardner is another place to tourist trip. She, along with Mario Cabret, played the main role in the melodrama “Pandora and the Flying Dutchman,” which was filmed here. Soon the actor fell in love with the film star, and her husband, Frank Sinatra, came to the city, but was late, since the girl herself fell in love, but not with Mario, but with the city of Tossa de Mar itself. This was the main reason for the erection of a bronze statue of Ava Gardner in 1992.

The image of the statue is taken from the already mentioned film - dressed in a luxurious evening dress, the girl admires the endless expanses Mediterranean Sea.

Church of Saint Vincent

The Church of St. Vincent, which was built in 1755, is made in the neoclassical style. It appeared on the site of a temple that was destroyed in the 15th century because it was too small for the parishioners who constantly visited it.

Partial elements of the interior decoration disappeared during the Civil War, but after restoration the church was restored to its original appearance and the wall paintings were restored. Statues of saints decorate the main entrance to the temple and the beautiful altar; in the church itself there are benches in two rows.

A copy of the Black Madonna is the main asset of the Church of St. Vincent. Near the church there is also a small chapel, inside of which there are many candles.

Tower of Vassal's Oath

Probably, the Tower of the Vassal Oath in Tossa de Mar is one of the leading attractions of the city. It was the stone walls of the tower that made it famous. It is located near the bay. A small commercial port is located right there. The stone silently reminds of the former greatness of the formidable defenders of the city.

Monument to Generations

The monument to generations is located on the Mediterranean coast. The idea of the creator of the sculpture is that the old man passes on his accumulated experience to his little grandson. This is probably why some people think that this is a kind of family idyll. The touching composition penetrates the hearts of even the strongest cynics.

Monument to a lonely girl

In Tossa de Mar there is another small sculpture that captivates tourists with its gloominess. The monument to a lonely girl is an original composition. It depicts a little girl holding a basket in her hands. It stands near the walls of the Vila Vella castle-fortress.

At night, the composition looks a little scary, because when wandering the streets, you wouldn’t expect to see a gloomy childish figure with his head down. The creator wanted to touch the feelings of parents who leave their children alone or do not pay attention to them, so that they feel how lonely and scared their children are.

Sculpture “Love of two octopuses”

The original futuristic sculpture “The Love of Two Octopuses” fits perfectly into the architecture of the small square, which is located near Central office on tourism.

This original sculpture can be found while traveling along one of the roads, or rather, in the area where they intersect, on Lloret Street. The sculpture resembles a cube with the bodies and tentacles of octopuses intertwined in it.

Chapel of San Miguel

Near the station in Tossa de Mar there is a small chapel of San Miguel. It is located right next to the old hospital for the poor, built in 1773. Now she plays the role of the local House of Culture. The chapel was erected at the same time as the hospital and for a long period of time it was the hospital church.

The chapel was named after the famous saint in Spain - Miguel. It stands out from ordinary churches due to its strongly pronounced transition from the Romantic to the Gothic style.

The horseshoe arch, which is the right side entrance, attracts attention, and the left arch is made in the usual Gothic style. Inside, the church has a small dome and an unusual altar, made in the Baroque style with a portrait of St. Miguel.

Tim and Kath Jewelery Store

The small store “Tim and Kath Jewelry” is owned by a couple who are in love with their business and with each other. It is located on Carrer la Guardia and is a successful creative project of Belgian designers.

In this tiny boutique, jewelers who draw inspiration from the beauty of the coast create beautiful jewelry from silver and precious stones. In the store you can buy various bags, bracelets, pendants and necklaces made by the hands of craftsmen, and if you don’t like anything, you can order exclusive wedding rings.

Codolar Beach

Codolar Beach is one of the largest beaches located close to the center of the town. Before the beach began to be used by tourists and was developed, it was a place where fishermen's boats spent the winter. By the way, they still exist today.

The beach sand is mixed with sea pebbles, which are polished sea water and time. Kodolar is surrounded by rocks that block the wind, and the calm waters are always popular with divers and swimmers. Here you can spot dolphins swimming just a hundred meters from the shore.

Now you know what Tossa de Mar (Spain) conceals. The city's attractions are always open to you, and you can go there right now.

HOLIDAY PRICES:

How much does a holiday in Tossa de Mar cost? October 2018.

tour cost

The tour was purchased according to the program early booking at Pegasus Tourist. The cost of the tour for four (two adults and two children - 12 years old and 3 years old), Tossa Beach 4* hotel, all inclusive for 8 days/7 nights amounted to 130 thousand rubles. This is flight + accommodation + insurance + group transfer, but excluding the cost of a Schengen visa.

Documents for visas were submitted later, for visas they paid 6 thousand per person, but children under 6 years old receive a Spanish Schengen visa for free, so the cost of visas for our company was 18 thousand. A nice bonus is that the Spaniards have opened up multiple visas for us, which are valid for two years.

There is a lot to see in Spain excursion program this country is very interesting, but with children we mostly prefer beach holiday. They only took sightseeing tour in Barcelona, costing 30 euros per person. I liked the excursion; it turned out to be an easy, easy walk through one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

But we received a much greater impression from another excursion - visiting a football match with the participation of FC Barcelona and its living legend Leonel Messi at the famous Camp Nou stadium. This pleasure is not cheap, tickets cost 115 euros per person (we went alone with our eldest son), but the impressions we received, the crazy energy that Barca fans give, are definitely worth the money.

True, on the Camp Nou website you can buy tickets for Barça matches much cheaper, for 55 euros, but then the question will arise of how to get from Tossa to the stadium and back, in our case, from the Tossa bus station, the ticket holders for the match were picked up by a club bus FC Barcelona and brought them to the entrance to the stadium, after the match the same bus took everyone back to Tossa. Very comfortably.

Food and products

Prices for food and wine in stores are quite reasonable. For example, the famous vacuum-packed jamon can even be bought for 1 euro. And we bought a five-liter canister of good Sangria for only 5 euros. Prices for wines vary, but for 5-8 euros you can buy quite decent wines. Although very cheap young wine in boxes, which can be purchased for literally a couple of euros, the quality is also very, very pleasing.

Total money spent on vacation

Helpful information?

Holiday impressions in August

The temperature in early August in the Costa Brava is comfortable, but the sea was no longer very calm: when the flag is yellow, the waves literally knock you off your feet and don’t allow you to rise, so it’s worth keeping in mind that perhaps a couple of days will be lost from your beach holiday - for wind and bad weather.

What to take with you on vacation?

You shouldn’t go to Spain in general and Catalonia in particular without sunscreen! Of course, you can buy it locally, but all the information on the label will be in Catalan, plus the cost is higher than in Russia. I also advise you to take panthenol, because there is a chance of getting sunburned even just walking down the street.

If you plan to go to Barcelona, bring clothes that you can wear to visit the temples (shoulders and knees covered), since the cost of scarves is cathedral- 150 euros per piece.

Where is the best place to stay?

Tossa de Mar is dotted with hotels, even if you choose a hotel not on the first coastline, the walk to the sea is very short, maximum 10-15 minutes. If you have a hotel without meals, don’t worry, there are a lot of cafes where you can have an inexpensive snack of croissants or local sandwiches.

What to do at the resort?

Be sure to visit the fortified city of Villa Vella, located on the banks of Tossa, and the municipal museum in it: paintings by Chagall, Picasso, Dali are exhibited there, and the entrance costs only a few euros.

Going into tourist centre You can get a free map of local attractions; you can see them all in one day, even if you come here for the weekend from Barcelona.

On the shore you can buy a ticket for a boat trip to underwater caves lasting about an hour and a half - I highly recommend it, the feeling is indescribable.

In Tossa itself there are three beaches with small, small pebbles (for some reason they write everywhere that there is sand, but in Tossa itself there is none! Well, or it is very large and rocky!), there are no cabins, there are two toilets on the beach and then a little further away. If you use a boat that takes you on an excursion, you can get to the sandy beaches, drive for about 15 minutes, but you can only return until 18:00, then the boats don’t go and you’ll be stuck in the bay until the next morning.

I didn’t like that a lot of boats come to the main beach (there is a pier and a makeshift pier, but they also stop in other places).

For shopping, it is better to go to Barcelona or Girona; in Tossa, prices are above average and the choice is much smaller. Here I advise you to take only souvenirs, since there are many ceramic products (magnets, coasters, pictures, figurines, etc.).

Although food prices in the supermarket are higher than in Barcelona (they are about the same as here), you can even eat a little cheaper in a cafe/restaurant. The ubiquitous bocadillos cost from 4 euros, bravos potatoes - 3.5, meat with a side dish - 12 euros. The further from the beach, the cheaper. I didn’t eat anything super tasty, the portions were quite average, but you won’t leave hungry.

Entertainment

If we talk about the beach, then there is no entertainment there, only the sea excursion “Feel the Costa Bravo” (cost 17 euros per person), but if you have visited it once, you will not go again. The city has several nightclubs, a museum, a church, remains ancient fortress. If you want a more party place, it is better to choose neighboring Lloret de Mar.

Pros of a holiday in Tossa de Mar

A beautiful and calm place, clean air, everything is close. The castle is sooo beautiful, I was ready to walk in it every day, it captivated me.

An hour's drive from Barcelona, high in the mountains, against the backdrop of stunningly picturesque landscapes, lies the most unusual monastery that has survived to this day - Sant Miquel del Fai. The monastery is located in a natural cave surrounded by mountains, forests, waterfalls, stalactite grottoes and rivers. An amazing and unique place where nature and the desire to know God merged together...

The first mention of this monastery dates back to 997. Until 1557, a community of Benedictine monks lived in the monastery. Then it began to be managed by priests who did not take a vow of seclusion. And already in the 19th century, the monastery was discovered by romantic writers who told the world about its history, legends and the extraordinary beauty of those places.

In the church, special attention should be paid to the tombstone of Count Guillemy Berenguer...

Until recently, only rich people from countries could afford to relax in this resort town Western Europe. But recently, prices have become much more affordable and the town, about which poets have more than once written poems and painters immortalized on their canvases, has become available to domestic tourists, offering a wonderful family vacation in this paradise, drenched in the sun and surrounded by greenery. We will tell you about the attractions, entertainment and some prices for holidays in Tossa de Mar in 2019 in this article.

Tossa de Mar is a cozy resort town that attracts travelers not only with its beach holidays, but also with its attractions. A holiday in Tossa de Mar will especially delight art lovers. This Costa Brava resort is suitable for a relaxing family holiday. All hotels have 2-3 floors, which creates a cozy atmosphere on the city streets.

The resort history of the town dates back to the 50s of the last century. At that time, the feature film “Pandora and the Flying Dutchman” was filmed in these places, and actress Ava Gardner, who participated in the filming, was delighted with the local beaches. With her help, the unremarkable fishing settlement gained wide popularity in bohemian circles, as well as among politicians and millionaires. Along with the construction of infrastructure and the arrival of investments, prosperity came to the city. For which, grateful local residents erected a monument to the actress, cast in bronze.

The bay in which the resort town is nestled is protected from high waves and wind by a rocky coast. The entire coastline is covered with rocks dotted with deep cracks, among which many mysterious grottoes are hidden. Overgrown with greenery, high cliffs, sometimes parting, form narrow straits. Here you can often find small coves, closed from prying eyes, where couples in love, people of art and lovers of scuba diving find solitude. Another thing the town was famous for in the 18th and 19th centuries was its wine corks, which were made here for most Spanish winemakers.

The resort of Tossa de Mar became known thanks to artists at the beginning of the 20th century. Among them was Chagall, who called the city a “blue paradise” and a “sea flower.” Walking through the streets of the old city, enjoy the medieval architecture of the churches and winding streets. There are many flower shops and small street cafes here. In the old part of the city you can see the old Church of St. Vincent from the 15th century. In the 19th century, part of the building was destroyed as a result of an explosion. The houses around it were built from the stones of the destroyed church.

The church houses an exact copy of the Madonna of Montserrat. Nearby there is a chapel where tourists come. Tossa de Mar has long been a favorite resort of wealthy Europeans. There is no noisy nightlife here. For lovers of a relaxing holiday, this is the best option. The beaches are clean, sandy, wide. On the sea promenade in the evening you can watch performances by local artists and various shows. You can take a glass-bottom boat trip along the Costa Brava. During stops you can swim or explore the caves, of which there are many along the coast.

Road

Tourists can get to Tossa de Mar from or, these cities have international airports. The main flow of tourists goes through the capital of Catalonia. The flight from Barcelona will last about 4.5 hours and cost from 97 to 211 EUR. From the Catalan capital to the resort you can order a taxi (about 100 EUR), buy a bus ticket (10 EUR + an hour and a half on the way), or an electric train (about 7 EUR).

What to expect from the weather

Since the Costa Brava area is the coolest Spanish coast, it has a very mild Mediterranean climate throughout the year. In the winter months, the outside air temperature is within + 5, and in the summer season it fluctuates around + 25. On average, there are 8 days of precipitation per month, and the swimming season begins in June and lasts until October.

Beaches

Three famous excellent sandy beaches resort town Tossa de Mar allows every vacationer to choose a place to suit his taste.

The first of them is Mar Grand, adjacent to the mountain on which the Villa Vella castle stands. The second beach, Mar Menuda, stretches on the other side of the bay, and the third is located not far from the ancient fortress.

They are also popular among local population and among visitors, so for those who want to spend time and sunbathe without prying eyes, it is wiser to sail on a rented boat to the coves hidden among the rugged rocky coastline. Moreover, the bottoms of rental boats are specially made transparent so that you can admire the rich underwater world and its inhabitants. Fans of diving and snorkeling also love to use them.

Which part of the city is best to stay?

There are only two districts in the town, which the local population is accustomed to dividing into the Old and New Towns.

Low-rise residential buildings with houses dating back to the last century are typical of the old part of the city. This can be called the center, since it all began with it in the 50s. Renting housing here will be more expensive. Moreover, it will not be any better or more comfortable than housing in the New Part. It’s just that the price is influenced by the general, preserved atmosphere of a Catalan town, with quiet, calm streets and national flavor.

The modern part is just a gradually expanding extension to the old part of the city. It turns out to be a little further from the sea, but this is a very dubious minus, given the size of the resort. From the windows of the local houses and loggias there is an excellent panorama of the Old city and the sea distance. But the housing here will be more spacious, modern and will cost a little less. Although, it rather depends on the level of the room or villa. Some apartments will cost even more than in the center - up to 1000 EUR for seven days during the holiday season.

There are no criminal outskirts or anything else like that in the town. It is calm and respectable, so the choice of where to stay rather depends on your wallet and personal taste.

Hotel service

As mentioned at the beginning, until recently the resort of Tossa de Mar was filled with respectable people from Western Europe. This naturally had an impact on the development of infrastructure and services. Including in hotels. Everything will undoubtedly be real high level, but it is better to book both rooms and villas in advance. Moreover, recently the cost of living has been trending downward. For example, a room for two persons for 7 nights will cost from 200 EUR.

Since there are few noisy night discos, this resort is ideal for those who want to relax in a calm, leisurely atmosphere alone or with the whole family.

However, those who prefer noisy companies and active pastime just need to go to the neighboring resort of Lloret de Mar, which is famous throughout the area for its incendiary musical show programs.

What to do in your spare time?

It’s better to start exploring the town on foot, leaving your car in the parking lot near the beach, since in the labyrinth of narrow, quiet streets, a car is more of a burden than a helper. Moreover, you should not rely on navigation using a navigator. A neat footpath leading past the town beach leads directly to the fortress of Villa Vella, built in the 12th century and very well preserved to this day. Perhaps this is because it was built according to ancient technology, or maybe thanks to the efforts of local authorities.

From the foot of the fortress, a delightful panorama opens before the eyes of tourists: the surrounding rocks, the sea distance, and residential areas of the city. Beautiful place in order to take some photos for memory! And a great opportunity to plunge into the past of this region. Imagine the measured lifestyle of a medieval Spaniard. think about eternal questions, wander among picturesque, silent ruins or visit a historical museum, or maybe climb a high lighthouse- all this will not cost much at all.

Those who like to take selfies will have the opportunity to take a photo in front of the bronze statue of actress Ava Garner, in addition to cinema, who played a big role in the fate of local residents and laid the foundation for the tourist fame of Tossa de Mar.

Those who are tired from the active climb up the mountain will be rewarded at the top with a stunning view and refreshing drinks or excellent coffee in a cozy cafe. And for just 2-3 EUR, everyone can go down on a train that runs back and forth at short intervals. They say the first impression is the best one.

This is probably how you fall in love with Tossa, with its quiet narrow streets and Spanish flavor: during your first walk, while watching the sunset from your hotel balcony. And the national festivals held here every year, mainly in the summer, contribute to strengthening the emerging sympathy. The most popular of them are Sant Jordi (falling on April 23), the Feast of Saint John (on the night of June 23-24) and celebrated on September 11, Catalonia Day. See impulsive and emotional Spaniards celebrating in the streets, dancing in bright, national costumes when there is laughter and music all around - this is an unforgettable event.

Religious buildings

Everyone knows that the Spaniards are a very pious nation. Even in the smallest villages, residents considered it their duty to build a church together. Tossa de Mar is no exception. The fairly spacious and tall Church of St. Vincent (the only one in the town) is located in the center, next to the embankment. It was erected in the 17th century and its interior decoration is not much different from any Catholic church, although there is a copy of the Black Madonna of the Montserrat monastery. On weekends the church is crowded. Masses are celebrated in different languages. But for those who want to see everything in a more relaxed atmosphere, it is better to come here on weekdays.

There are also two chapels in the town. The first chapel of Our Lady of Help is very “miniature” and is located next to the church, and the second is located in the old hospital for the poor (St. Miguel Hospital). It was built in 1773, but given its fairly venerable age, the building has been perfectly preserved. The interior decoration of the chapel is modest. Upon entering, the gaze is drawn to the altar, where a white statue of the humble Saint Miguel stands.

There is no charge for visiting the church and chapels, the only thing is that during the peak summer season women should pay more attention to their clothing and follow a certain dress code when visiting such places.

Attractions

In the 12th century, the Villa Vella fortress was erected on a high coastal mountain to protect the settlement from numerous filibusters. Its powerful walls with three watchtowers and the remains of a guard road can be seen up close when you climb to the top. Inside is the municipal museum, which is one of the first cultural institutions of contemporary art in the country. One part of its exhibition consists of various mosaics from the times of the Roman Empire and works of famous painters, for example, works by Marc Chagall, who visited Tossa several times, are exhibited here. The famous artist captured the surrounding landscapes in many of his paintings, surprisingly subtly conveying the Spanish flavor of the town.

Another part of the museum collection is located in the governor's house. It was built back in the Middle Ages, however. In the 18th and 20th centuries it was reconstructed. The works of artists are exhibited here, as well as various antiquities found by archaeologists in these places during excavations.

Another museum is located inside the lighthouse. In addition, there is an opportunity to look at the exhibition of the local Historical Museum on the coast, tourists will also be interested in wandering through the ruins of a very ancient villa (4th century), which belonged to a certain Roman, and visiting churches built in the Middle Ages.

To explore the sights of Tossa, tourists are usually led along a set of cut stone stairs to the foot of Villa Vella, and even higher, along winding walking paths, where they have excellent, stunning views of the town and its surroundings. Another observation deck is located in the fortress on the Tower of the Moors. On the way to it, to take a breath and freshen up, you can stop by one of the many cafes.

Other popular a tourist route passes by the rocky coastline of the Costa Blanca. Vacationers also have the opportunity to walk around Sa Riera, an amazing botanical park with its beauty, or explore the Old Town, wandering through the labyrinths of its narrow, quiet streets.

Is there anything interesting nearby?

Tossa de Mar is located in such a way that vacationers, unnoticed by themselves, become lovers of long walks. This is facilitated by a huge number of pedestrian paths. Everything is very convenient and civilized, there are information signs everywhere. For example, hikers can go on an excursion to the Church of Sant Grau (Ermita Sant Grau d’Ardenya), located 15 km from the resort. Of course, you can get there much faster by car, but a walk along a good asphalt road will allow you to fully enjoy the mountain air and the stunning beauty of the surrounding landscapes, and numerous signs will prevent you from getting lost.

The church was built in the 15th century, but since then it has been completed and reconstructed several times. Services are held there, entrance is open to everyone, and on October 13, on the feast of St. Grau, real pandemonium occurs here.
Another amazing feature of this church is the bar-restaurant located in the church wing, where visitors are offered to taste traditional national cuisine.

Where to go shopping

Tossa de Mar, however, like the nearby Catalan towns, cannot be called a paradise for shopaholics, unlike, for example, Barcelona. Huge shopping centers not here. You shouldn't expect anything extraordinary from local stores. Of course, there are shops with unique products, but their prices are also impressive. There are unique fairs and bazaars with various consumer goods, where there is “any product for 1 euro” and there are retail outlets at a higher level, but the prices are correspondingly inflated. Please note that on Sunday all shopping establishments are closed.

Catalan souvenirs

There are many shops with souvenirs in the town. There you can buy traditional Catalan goods, paintings, dishes, crafts, etc. Although, instead of magnets, it would be more interesting to buy postcards depicting local landscapes. Or send them from Tossa (as a rule, stamps are sold in the same place as postcards) to friends, relatives and even to yourself. Surely, after returning to your homeland, it will be very pleasant to receive such a message and see this wonderful resort place again.

The area is constantly cleaned, there are trash bins and showers. The city authorities have created all the conditions for a comfortable stay.

Mar Menuda Beach

The beach is completely covered with pebbles and creates a magnificent bay - a favorite place for newlyweds' photo sessions. Its width is approximately 40 meters and its length is about three hundred. This is a very clean place. The water is clear and blue.
