Which Goa beaches should you choose for your holiday? How is North Goa different from South Goa? Where is the best place to relax in Goa? Review of resorts Where to relax in South Goa.

The busiest and most bustling of the quiet resorts in southern Goa is Colva, the oldest and largest resort, which retains a colonial style replete with fishermen's huts. The most crowded is the central beach. The “highlight” of Kolva is the seaside restaurants standing on stilts - like huts on chicken legs. The food here is amazing and there's also some nightlife at Ziggys and Splash. Among vacationers in Colva, young people and couples without children prevail, although other categories are also found.

Majorda

The most exotic resort in South Goa, the local beaches are surrounded by coconut palms and other strange plants. Holidays in Majorda are calm, but not devoid of activity. Here you can ride on water devices, play tennis, volleyball, and also try the fish of your choice. Be sure to try the baked goods; they are made here according to ancient recipes - using coconut milk.

The narrowest resort in South Goa, but also the most respectable. Celebrities, politicians and oligarchs like to relax here, including Bill Clinton and Paul McCartney. Of course, the location of the resort is a spit of white beaches, surrounded by water on three sides. Most establishments in Mobor can be safely classified as luxury.

In a sense, it is a “brother” of Mobor, where mostly respectable people relax. It’s quiet, cozy here, dolphins come to visit you, you can go on a boat to the sea and taste the freshest seafood that fishermen will catch before your eyes. Tourists also have the opportunity to go fishing themselves and then order dinner prepared from their own catch.

Palolem

This resort is called the “pearl” of the state. Fluffy sand, a calm sea - warm like fresh milk, an abundance of palm trees lining the beaches, nice people from all over the world - all this makes you come back here again and again. Due to the popularity of Palolem, it can hardly be called secluded, but it is still quieter here than in the north of Goa. In addition, there is a chance to go trekking, diving, canyoning and snorkeling, as well as communicate with dolphins (however, you will have to ask local sailors to take you to the dolphins by boat, but the residents of Palolem readily agree, because such a “trick” is their pride).

This part of the state of Goa is the most developed in terms of entertainment, dating, leisure activities and excursions. In the 70s, this area was called a mecca for hippies. Although those days have passed, the resort area has acquired a different appearance and has become more comfortable, however, the majority of tourists arriving in North Goa are young people who love drive, fun, intense relaxation and nightlife. Tourists vary in income level, but agree on the main thing - preferences. There are also older vacationers - former hippies, creative personalities and other lovers of life on the move. Join us, it will be interesting and fun.

The most Russian resort in India, jokingly called the “Russian village”. And this, in fact, is true - almost 80% of vacationers in Morjim are Russians, and some of them live here on a permanent basis, subsisting on rental housing in their homeland. Why is the resort so popular among compatriots? Why not? Large and still moderately crowded sandy beaches (without rocks), a gently sloping entrance to the sea suitable for children, a warm atmosphere (there are many couples with babies here), no fuss, excellent and inexpensive cuisine, as well as the opportunity to windsurf - what more do you need? to turn life into a constant holiday?!

If you love partying, then you need to head to Arambol, which is the “epicenter” of entertainment for hippies, freaks, junkies and other outrageous youth. Here you can watch and show various performances right on the street, arrange themed gatherings, and do yoga (the local famous yoga center, by the way, belongs to one of our compatriots). The local beach is long, you can find very secluded corners. Housing is budget, mostly bungalows. Arambol has a 24-hour party scene, but you will have to look for drinking, dancing, and luxury rooms at neighboring resorts. However, what happens here is much more interesting.

Mandrem

“Neighbor” Arambol is a quiet “oasis”, where mostly married couples with children and parents relax. This is facilitated by the gentle entrance, the absence of rocks and stones on the beaches, ideal cleanliness and a spacious coastline. There is good infrastructure here: there is a market, an exchange office, a pharmacy, cozy restaurants. Many tourists who arrive in Tandem are fond of meditation. If you want a dance party, head to neighboring Anjuna or Vagator (the road along the sea will take no more than 20 minutes one way).

Calangute, which was once (in the 60s) a leader among its kind, closes the top three hippie resorts. You won’t find tranquility here, but there are more than enough extraordinary acquaintances, meditation, yoga, massage. There are also karate courses. However, Calangute is famous not only for relaxation sessions; here you can also “have a blast” at a disco, buy souvenirs (merchants at every turn), and also enjoy amazing Indian cuisine. Don’t expect much comfort - there are few hotels, the beach is not pristine, but staying in a bungalow or guesthouse will cost moderately, and you will have plenty of money left over for entertainment and shopping. For young people - just the thing!

This resort is located in the center of North Goa and is famous primarily for its dance focus. Despite the imperfections of the local coast (rocks, steep descent into the sea, dark sand), Vagator is loved by many, because it is especially beautiful here, nature seems frozen in a wild state and there are few people. The accommodation at the resort is comfortable, the restaurants serve wonderful food, you can dance until you drop - why not, if you are energetic, love everything unusual and want to recharge yourself with vivid impressions?!

Anjuna is actually Vagator's "twin". There are also not the best beaches here, but it is fun, a lot of dancing, fun, laughter and unusual emotions. This is one of the rare Indian resorts where you can see a Goa trance party. There are moderate tourists in Anjuna, you can even find secluded places on the fluffy sand. Except for Wednesdays, when traders and tourists from virtually all over the state come to the village to stock up on souvenirs, clothes and other goods at the famous Flimarket, the largest in Goa.

The resort abounds with married couples with heirs, because there are comfortable living conditions and there are nannies who entertain children of all ages. Meanwhile, local bungalows and villas are no less popular than large hotels. Aguada is beautiful, cozy, has a good beach and you can stroll through a tropical garden, but nightlife is a little difficult, so you’ll have to go to neighboring resorts.

The least crowded resort in North Goa, but that doesn’t mean it’s cheap. There is little accommodation at the resort, so even renting a bamboo hut will charge you a decent amount. As they say, you have to pay for silence. Those who want to enjoy privacy, fluffy sand of an unusual dark color, picturesque landscape and local idyll - more than enough, local authorities do not keep up with the pace in terms of hotel construction. Often tourists who love Ashvem act wisely by making a knight's move - they live in neighboring villages and come here to relax on the beach. You can follow their example. The highlight of Ashvem beaches is the white tents with comfortable sofas, where you can enjoy Ayurveda, massage during the day, and parties in the evening.

Sinquerim is known for the oldest beach in Goa, which has been given the status of a nature reserve. However, its venerable age does not prevent the beach from always maintaining its “brand”, for example, offering water entertainment at the level of respectable European resorts. If you want to lie around like seals, and if you want to get in shape and recharge your drive, you can go surfing, snorkeling, diving, parasailing, and also play volleyball. The service in Sinquerim is impeccable, the infrastructure is impressive, but the prices are appropriate. The beach is not very wide (due to the advance of sand on the shore from under the famous sunken River Princess), but it is comfortable, quiet, and uncrowded. However, experienced travelers claim that the local authorities will soon deal with the ship.

They say that the beach in Candolim is the most beautiful in Goa. The resort abounds with decent hotels, shops and restaurants - more expensive than in neighboring resorts. But you don’t mind paying more for such a service, you’ll see for yourself. Relaxing here is a special pleasure, because there is a chance to “meet” dolphins. Candolim is said to be more similar in atmosphere to South Goa. There are plenty of married couples with children, but due to the steepness of the descent to the water, parents with small toddlers choose other villages. The highlight of Candolim is a crystal clear pond with huge red lotus flowers. The most beautiful vacation photos are taken in this place. Try it yourself!

Baga

Baga is the “cradle” of local tourism, since it was here that the first vacationers who came from other countries appeared in the 20s of the last century. True, then most of them were hippies, but now they are travelers of different backgrounds and ages. The range of prices offered by locals for accommodation and food is encouraging: you can find both budget options and luxury services. Baga is famous for its fish restaurants, as well as French and Italian cuisine. One of the most exciting entertainments in Baga is the nightly fish barbecue, and the fish used is freshly caught from the sea. The resort is also good in terms of shopping, at least in comparison with its “brothers”. Every Saturday evening there is a fair in Baga. It cannot be called the largest in Goa, but you can find exclusive souvenirs and replenish your wardrobe with colorful outfits. The beach in Baga can hardly be called large, but a wonderful river flows through the village, in which you can also swim. The children adore her. And experienced tourists strongly advise parents to visit one of the state's old-time disco clubs - the Tito's nightclub, which appeared almost 45 years ago and has not lost its popularity to this day.

Which Goa resort did you like it? Or maybe you want to go around several or even all? It’s your right, you definitely won’t have to regret this decision, you’ll see!

The standard of living in Goa leaves much to be desired, in small villages you are almost certain to see garbage, not very tidy residents and a deplorable level of neglect. But this is not a plague-ridden area, people on the streets are not lepers, infection does not fly in the air. And it’s unlikely that you will climb into the wilds of civilization. Well, you already know that you need to wash your hands and not drink tap water.

Myth No. 2. Hotel service is so-so

Photo: Kiev.Victor / Shutterstock. com

No, that's not entirely true. In North Goa there are many small hotels of two or three stars and really mediocre service (they will not be cleaned every day, the air conditioner may break down, and they will not rush to you when you call). People come here to party, so if the hotel has a bed, it's already suitable.

If comfort and attention from the staff are important to you, South Goa is for you- four to five star hotels and European level service. Here you will find complete relaxation and helpful staff.

South. Top 3 hotels on Ostrovka:

  • : double rooms from 6190 rub./night*;
  • : double rooms from 10,590 rub./night;
  • : double rooms from RUB 17,390/night.

North.Top 3 hotels on Ostrovka:

  • : double rooms from 2999 rub./night;

Myth No. 3. All Goa beaches have snow-white sand and crystal clear water

Photo: Lena Serditova / Shutterstock. com

Alas, this is not the case everywhere. In order for the beach to look like the picture, you need to keep an eye on it, so heavenly beaches- this is in the South, where vacations are more expensive and the infrastructure is better. There are beaches in the North, but they don’t pretend to be picturesque.

Beaches of North Goa

  • Terekol: one of the few deserted beaches in North Goa.
  • Mandrem: there are many natural pools along the coastline, the water in them heats up quickly- It feels like you are bathing in fresh milk.
  • Small and Big Vagator: Bigknown for its incendiary parties, Maly- a more secluded and wild beach, with rocks and coves.
  • Ashvem: Idyllically tranquil place, great for kite surfing.

Beaches of South Goa

  • Bogmalo: a modern and very touristy beach with many cafes and bars serving excellent seafood.
  • Benaulim: the beach is famous for schools of dolphins that periodically delight vacationers with pirouettes.
  • Varca and Cavelossim: golden sand, lots of palm trees, and luxury hotels all around.
  • Palolem: the southernmost beach where you can find that same white sand, azure water and peace.

Myth No. 4. All food is fiery and spicy, you will have to starve

Photo: Erofeenkov / Shutterstock. com

No, you won't have to starve. Goa is adapting to the influx of tourists from all over the world; owners of cafes and restaurants often warn about particularly spicy dishes and offer a European menu. And some establishments even serve borscht, okroshka and dumplings. True, according to the author's recipes.

If you went to a remote village and went to a local eatery, the chance of eating something and breathing fire is very high, so be careful. Well, if you are really afraid of not being able to cope with the local cuisine, book a hotel with meals included - for example, half board (breakfast + dinner).

Myth No. 5. The most fun is parties to Goa trance music, there is no more entertainment

Well, of course not. Goa trance- a trend in electronic music that originated here in the late 1980s. You can see trancers at one of the beach parties, these parties are not legal and you can meet very strange personalities there, but it’s interesting to watch from the outside. If this action does not interest you, here are some iconic places where you can while away the evening.

  • Deltin Royale Casino, Panaja- floating casino in the capital of Goa, beautiful lighting turns on in the evening, and you will never miss the ship with the casino. It doesn’t matter if gambling isn’t your thing, come listen to live music and have a cocktail.
  • Club Cubana, Arpora - one of the popular nightclubs, from the roof of which a magnificent panorama of the city opens. There is an entrance fee, but drinks are included in the ticket price. The club has several spacious rooms and a swimming pool.
  • Night Market, Arpora- best place to learn how to haggle and see what local sellers have to offer. You can find a lot of things: music CDs, handmade embroidered scarves, tea, souvenirs, spices. When you're fed up with shopping, switch to the food court and street concerts.

Myth No. 6. Goa - small province, nothing to see there

No matter how it is! Goa is a very special state of India with amazing nature and a colorful mixture of cultures. Write down what you need to see.

  • Chapora Fort: This defensive fortress- Portuguese heritage of the 17th century. The hill overlooks the Indian Ocean and the coast. Travelers have a tradition- come to the fortress at sunset on the last day and spend the sun.
  • Church Square, Panaji: The main attraction is the snow-white Church of the Virgin Mary, and nearby there is a cozy garden that the locals adore.
  • Dudhsagar Falls: This multi-level waterfall is one of the 100 tallest waterfalls in the world. It is no coincidence that the name is translated as “Milk Ocean”: due to the contrast with the dark stone, it seems that the water is milky white.
  • Sahakari Spice Plantation, Ponda: To make the most of your time, book a tour right away. They will take you around the plantation and tell you what and how it grows here. For entertainment, they will ride elephants and teach you how to climb palm trees. Then there will be a lunch break and you will be treated to dishes with homegrown spices. You can buy the spices you like right there in the shop.

What is the currency in Goa?

Local currency - rupees The rate is very tempting: for $100 you will get 6,808.01 rupees (1 USD = 68.02 INR as of 01/27/2017). For residents this is a fortune, so at first everything will seem too cheap. But don’t be fooled, soon you will begin to distinguish between cheap and very cheap.

North or South Goa: where is it better to go on vacation?

Good afternoon friends! If you want to escape from the slush or frost to the warm sea in winter, then Goa is the cheapest destination. Tickets there are of course expensive, but the prices for accommodation and food will definitely please tourists.

Where is the best place to go on vacation in Goa without going broke? Where to vacation, in the Northern or Southern part of the state? How are they different? Read on, I hope my thoughts will help you weigh the pros and cons and choose the right place.

I want to immediately point out that the difference between the North and South of the state lies not only in the territorial division and financial component. North Goa is a place of non-stop parties and get-togethers. The beaches in this part of the state were favored by hippies and other informals back in the 70s. As a rule, people come here in search of answers to questions about the meaning of life, for enlightenment and alienation from the “benefits” of civilization.

Accordingly, the contingent of vacationers here is unique. Extremely strange characters constantly appear. Of course, there are no aggressive people who attack others here. Everyone is very positive, relaxed and inspired. Nobody bothers or scares anyone. But it’s difficult to call the northern part of Goa a quiet and secluded place.

Holidays here are more suitable for young people, for lovers of beach parties and music festivals, for those who want to visit the ocean for more than budget money, and are ready to forget about comfort for this.

I think it’s not worth going here with a child, especially a small one. Although, for example, in , there are many “winterers” with children. But that's a different story. As a rule, parents choose this resort in order to save money, because they have to pay for a long stay, and these are completely different numbers. For a short vacation with children, it is better to choose a quieter beach in North Goa, or go to the southern resorts of the state.

As for the South part of Goa, the atmosphere here is completely different. More expensive and respectable hotels with a corresponding contingent: wealthy tourists, European pensioners, many families with children. There are fewer late-night parties, loud parties, and no spontaneous and heterogeneous gatherings.

Thus, where is the best place to go on vacation in Goa depends on the purpose for which you are going there, what kind of train, what holiday regulations you prefer, and how willing you are to give up comfort.

State beaches

I will not describe each in detail, because I have already talked about them in the article. Now I just want to outline the differences between the North and the South. But let me make a reservation right away: you shouldn’t take everything too unambiguously. If desired, both here and there, you can find cleanliness, silence, privacy, or, conversely, vibrant parties.

The general thing is that the water is often muddy and far from turquoise and azure in color. This is due to the flat bottom, the waves stir up the sand. Everywhere there are many roughly put together cafes (shakes) with the same assortment of dishes. The sun loungers, both in the North and South of the state, belong to the shakes, and you can use them for free by ordering something from the menu. In all other respects, North and South Goa are “heaven and earth”.

The beaches of North Goa are somewhat less clean and well-groomed. The sand is coarse, yellow with a slight shade of gray. And above Vagator - with dark red-gray sand of volcanic origin with an admixture of clay. Many have a stone ridge; you can see algae, shells, etc. thrown out by the waves. No one is in a hurry to remove all this. Sometimes cows and dogs roam along the shore. They don’t bite or interfere, but still, it’s somehow not very pleasant.

On the beaches of North Goa, loud music is always playing in the shakes. This makes it quite noisy. In addition, all the “informal” parties mostly take place on the shore. There are often festivals held there, parties with trance music, various groups of similar interests gather there, in general, there is always some kind of “movement”. For ordinary tourists who just come to the sea for a couple of weeks, it is certainly interesting to watch for a day or two. But further, such a neighborhood becomes quite burdensome.

In south Goa the beaches are wider. In some places it is even difficult to understand where one ends and the other begins. They are cleaner, and not because they are removed. There just isn't such a crowd of people here. The sand in the South is white, somewhere light golden, and palm trees with lush greenery stretch along the shoreline. It is less noisy here; if you move 200 meters from the center of this or that beach, you can even become “Robinson”. There are not many local residents on the southern beaches; middle- and high-income tourists come here; most of the vacationers are Europeans of retirement age.

For beautiful, clean and uncrowded beaches, it is better to go to South Goa. The north is busier, but you can still find beautiful scenery here.

Transfer

There is only one international airport in Goa. It is located in the very center of the state, so there is no difference between transfer times to the Southern or Northern part. You only need to proceed from the distance to a particular resort. I wrote about how to get to Goa on your own.

If the tour price already includes a transfer, then there is no need to rack your brains. If not, then it’s better to get there by taxi. You can order it either online in advance, and they will meet you at the airport, or pick it up right on the spot. The cost of the trip depends on the distance and whether you plan to travel on a public or private one.

At the exit from the airport there is a taxi stand, the prices for the trip are indicated on the board. In the first column the distance is written in kilometers, in the second the cost without air conditioning (Non A/C), in the third with air conditioning (A/C). From 11 pm to 5 am, 35% must be added to the daily price.

If you take a taxi from private owners, then you can (and even need) bargain with them. The average price per kilometer is 20 rupees. In terms of time, expect 65 km to take about an hour and a half.

You can go by bus. They don't have numbers, only the names of the places the bus passes. You need to find your locality and count after how many stops you get off. On the one hand, it’s cheap (5-40 rupees depending on the distance), on the other hand, it’s quite boring, long and noisy.

Another option is rickshaws (from 3 to 9 rupees), but this is quite exotic. In addition, all the street dirt will be yours, plus the heat and noise.

Actually, it turns out that the transfer does not depend on the North or the South. It all depends on your budget and travel distance.

Housing level

There are no problems with housing in Goa. In the North, inexpensive hotels of 3-4 stars and .

There are “cardboard” houses with minimal amenities. Inside there is only a bed and a bedside table, instead of a door there is a curtain. The price is approximately 500 rupees. Living is certainly cheap, but quite ascetic, and perhaps only possible because of youth.

Guesthouses have more amenities, prices range from 200 to 1500 rupees per night. The cost depends on whether you rent a bed in a shared room or a separate room, and the distance from the sea also plays a role.

Hotel room prices depend on the number of stars, distance from the sea and the number of services provided: $60-100 for 4-star hotels, $40-80 for 3-star hotels. And in a 2-star hotel you can find a room for $20.

But in 1-2 star hotels, as well as in guest houses, something can easily go wrong. Either the air conditioner or refrigerator does not work, problems with water, torn linen, etc. So it’s better to focus on reviews, listen to the advice of “experienced” people, although information on very cheap housing is rare.

In South Goa there are also inexpensive 2-3 star hotels, but room prices are higher. There are a lot more “normals” here! ¾ star hotels, even two-star hotels can be found acceptable. There are 5-star hotels from major global chains. The conditions there are luxurious, the staff is ready to fulfill your every whim. Prices start from 9-10 thousand and above.

Conclusion: in the North of Goa you can find completely “free” offers, but you will have to put up with a complete lack of sanitary or other amenities. This option is not to everyone's taste. Or with “jambs” in the service with an average budget. So for young people and those who are not very picky about comfort, it is quite suitable and better to go there. But if you value comfort, cleanliness and service, then there is a high probability of getting all this in South Goa, it is better to stay there. But prices will be higher.

Nutritional Features

You shouldn’t book rooms with meals in Goa, well, if only with breakfast.

In expensive hotels the food is good, but you won’t get “all inclusive” Turkey here. Everything will be tasty, but modest. For the money you spend on food, you can eat a hundred times tastier and more satisfying on the shore.
In budget hotels you can find inedible and meager food served on sticky tables and broken dishes. It is much more pleasant and cheaper, in my opinion, to find a cozy coastal cafe and treat yourself every day to different dishes from fresh seafood prepared in front of you.

There are no problems with necks either in North or South Goa. But the cost of the dishes is slightly different. The average dinner bill with moderate alcohol for two people in the southern part of the state will be between 1700-2000 rupees. In the North we usually paid no more than 1500 rupees.

In the Northern part of Goa, I recommend dining in places where there are more tourists. It is better to avoid dubious empty necks. In the South this is somehow simpler. Almost all establishments are in demand. Sanitary conditions often leave much to be desired throughout the state.

If we consider where it is better to go, to the South or the North in terms of food, then in terms of the quality of cooking there is not much difference, but in terms of pricing, the North is a little cheaper.

Service and infrastructure

For those who cannot live without the Internet, Wi-Fi is available in hotels and almost all cafes, both in the South and North of Goa. The speed varies depending on how many users are on the line at the same time.

In Benaulim we spent all our time on the beach. There weren’t many people then and Wi-Fi was everywhere. But at the reception it was impossible not only to talk on Skype, but even just to write something, it constantly crashed.

In expensive hotels, Wi-Fi is usually already included in the room price. In cheaper hotels there may be a fee, but the coastal necks will definitely save you, they give out the Internet to their clients for free.

There is an Internet cafe in North Goa because freelancers come there for the winter and work through it. For an hour you will pay 40-80 rupees. There are probably some in large villages in the South, too, but I haven’t seen them.

In general, the infrastructure is better developed in the North of Goa, there are kindergartens with nannies, travel offices, more shops, and other amenities. But in the South, all this is of higher quality, and of course, more expensive.

In the North you will have to put up with insects, rodents, trash cans, dirty markets and terrible traffic on the road. In the South, although this is still India and you shouldn’t expect miracles, it is noticeably cleaner and quieter. Traffic on the roads is more orderly.

Thus, if you are afraid of garbage dumps, stray dogs and cows, then South Goa will be much more pleasant for relaxation, but you will have to spend money.

Excursions and leisure

If you like active recreation, sightseeing and learning something new, then Goa is unlikely to really surprise you with anything. They don't come here for this. Especially in the south of the state. Tourists are entertained by diving and fishing. But they can only impress beginners. Multi-colored fish and corals, rather fantastic. Turtles, stingrays, and sharks are more common. On average, diving starts from 1500 rupees.

In the northern part of the state there are old fortresses left over from the times of colonization (Aguada, Korjum). In the South there are interesting reserves and national parks: Cotigao, Bandla, Mhadei.

More and more iconic attractions are located in neighboring states, and 2/3-day excursions are organized there.

My opinion

Where is it better to go to Goa, to the South or North, depends on the budget, type of vacation and composition of the group. For parties and entertainment, with a small budget, it is better to choose the Northern part. You will always find something to do here. But the conditions will be spartan and you will have to put up with dirt and noise.

If you like a beach and vegetable vacation with maximum comfort and service, then go to the south of the state. But be prepared that you will have to fork out some money.

Of course, this is not all adventures, there is not enough time, other blog sections also require attention, but I will definitely continue. Subscribe to updates so you don't miss the most interesting things.

By the way, this winter I’m going to go to Goa with my family again for a couple of weeks, but I don’t see any cheap offers from tour operators yet. I can’t do it on my own either, I’m tracking tickets, but so far there are no budget ones. If any of the readers suddenly have any information on this issue, I would be grateful for the tip, write to me by email. Now I’m considering all the options, both “package” and not, I’ll be based on the price.

This is where I say goodbye for a moment, leave comments, I will be sure to answer everyone.
Tatiana Solomatina.

Goa is a state in the western part of the Indian Peninsula, washed by the waters of the Arabian Sea. From a tourist point of view, it can be divided into northern and southern sectors. The state is a great destination for a beach holiday and is suitable for different types of travelers.

Many tourists ask a completely logical question: what to choose - North or South Goa? Estimates and opinions on this matter, even from experts, are purely subjective, so here you need to proceed from your personal preferences, prejudices and financial situation.

So, let's figure out which is better - North or South Goa? Let's note the advantages and disadvantages of both options, consider the opinions of vacationers and draw appropriate conclusions.

Society

First, let's look at the social component and outline the differences between North and South Goa. The upper part of the state is suitable for those who do not seek to designate their social status as such. North Goa enjoys enviable popularity thanks to the hippie movement. In addition, the state was chosen by adherents of other informal movements.

Simply put, if you are satisfied with the abundance of young people, the nocturnal lifestyle and downshifting is close to you, then the choice between South or North Goa is quite obvious in favor of the latter. There are almost no premium hotels here, and almost all tourist accommodation can be called budget. The private sector has established itself as a quite tolerable and inexpensive guesthouse, where there is a place for vacationers with any budget.

South part

If you are used to measuring the quality of your vacation by the stars of hotels and inns, then the south of the state is at your service. Almost all travel agencies answer the question of where is better - North or South Goa - in favor of the latter. Respectable and far from cheap hotels prevail here, as well as clean and uncrowded beaches. For many tourists, this is a critical factor when choosing a holiday destination. Almost all southern hotels have their own beaches, organize special meals and offer nanny services for children.

One of the obvious disadvantages of the south is the lack of at least some decent leisure time. Yes, there are entertainment complexes on the beaches where both children and adults can have a lot of fun, but all of them are somehow connected with water and sand (diving, surfing, kiting, attractions). When it starts to get dark, there is practically nothing to occupy yourself with, except perhaps a free bar.

When choosing between South or North Goa, you need to keep in mind that the first is more suitable for established married couples with children and respectable businessmen, and the second is a haven for unburdened youth.

Prices

As for prices, there is a difference, and a significant one. Despite the fact that both South and North Goa belong to the same state, the pricing policies of local stores and markets vary greatly. So, in the south you can buy some kind of souvenir for one price, but you can find exactly the same one in the north for several times cheaper.

In general, the abundance of goods in markets and shops is amazing. You can find almost everything there: clothes made from natural fabrics, jewelry, bags, hats and much more. The flea markets in Anjuna and Panaji are especially popular among tourists. The assortment of goods is so diverse that your eyes simply run wild. In the southern part of the state, only Margao has a more or less tolerable market. But there they will rip you off, offering exorbitant prices for a completely mundane product. If you are looking for some exotic products or spices, then you should definitely visit the markets in Colva and Cavelossim.

Infrastructure

When choosing between South or North Goa, it is also useful to know that they differ from each other not only in beaches, hotels and prices. The south of the state has a calmer atmosphere. There are no large shopping centers or other hypermarkets here.

In the villages you can find only small shops that sell only essential products. For something serious you will have to go to local markets or, again, to the north of Goa. People come to the south of the state for a relaxing holiday on the beach, quiet fishing and water sports. There are no nightclubs, noisy parties or discos until the morning - only silence and tranquility.

The northern part of Goa has a more developed infrastructure. Life here manifests itself both day and night: crazy parties, an abundance of 24-hour clubs, all kinds of discos. All this attracts young tourists, local teenagers and informals.

Holidays in North Goa

The beaches of the northern part of Goa are inferior to the southern ones in their beauty and content. Here you can even find gray or coarse sand. Well-maintained and decent beaches are located in Calangute, Arambol and Anjuna.

There is a more or less calm atmosphere in Manderem and Aguada: you can come here with children without fear of noise and eternally idle youth. The beach in Arambol, where grayish-white sand predominates, is especially popular among holidaymakers. Judging by the numerous reviews on travel forums, this is where you can get the best quality vacation.

There are numerous bungalows, cafes and guesthouses along the entire beach in Arambol, and there are several serious centers for yoga lovers. The crowd here is varied, but the length of the beach allows you to find both a suitable place and company.

Features of northern Goa

Young tourists prefer the noisier beach on Anjuna, which is always full of people. Swimming is a little spoiled by the presence of pebbles and algae, but this does not stop young people. Calangute Beach is enviably popular, where you can get lost in the abundance of entertainment options. If you are interested in something exotic and informal, then you can visit Vagator, where fans of illegal and trans parties gather.

Those who prefer active recreation on the water will certainly be delighted with Morjimi Beach. Here you can not only go windsurfing and kiting, but also meet compatriots, and in large numbers. For several years now, this beach has been considered a haven for Russian-speaking tourists.

Holidays in south Goa

All beaches in the south of the state are clean and uncrowded. Fine sand from golden to white is poured throughout. The most “selfish” beaches are Velsao, Utorda and Cansaulim.

Do you want palm trees like those on tourist posters? Then you need to go to Bogmalo. The beach is surrounded on all sides by beautiful and well-groomed palm trees. Small restaurants are neatly located between them, where you can always be offered quality dishes, including seafood. There are also good diving schools here, where almost anyone can learn this interesting area.

Features of southern Goa

The very beautiful Palolem beach with crystal clear white sand is located south of all the others. The place is distinguished by dense vegetation and a very convenient gentle slope into the sea. Children are simply delighted with the attractions of this beach: here you can watch dolphins splashing near the shore, and if you are lucky, even touch them.

One of the most expensive beaches in the state is Mobor. The strip by the sea is dotted with exceptionally clean sand of bright yellow color. On the shore of the beach there is a chain of very expensive premium and VIP class hotels. Here you will not need anything. You just have to wave your hand, and the helpful staff will tell, show and bring everything you need. So the choice between South or North Goa largely depends on how much you are willing to spend on your vacation.

When hearing the word “India,” most tourists have double associations, which are based on the customs and way of life of Indians. However, poverty and unsanitary conditions will not frighten experienced tourists, because the country has many protected areas, which have something to appreciate. One of these is the resort region of Goa.

Russian tourists are also attracted to Goa by quite reasonable prices. Here you can relax for ridiculous money, because the beaches and swimming in the ocean are free pleasures. And many hotels and hostels welcome travelers with an open soul.

Often tourists, having decided on a holiday in Indian paradise, cannot decide whether to go to North or South Goa. We will tell you how these regions differ and where it is better to go.

Respectable South

Tourists who are accustomed to measuring the quality of their holiday by the star rating of hotels are better off choosing South Goa as their travel destination. In the reviews you can see many recommendations, which indicate one important fact: the beaches here are the cleanest. A quiet and relaxing holiday on the beautiful ocean coast is guaranteed to you!

South Goa is an excellent solution for a family holiday with children

In expensive hotels you can meet mainly vacationers from Europe, who are not afraid of the lack of entertainment. After all, apart from doing nothing on the beach and standard animation programs at the hotel, there is practically nothing to do here.

South Goa is an excellent solution for families with children. The beaches are uncrowded, comfortable rooms, and attentive service promise to make your vacation calm and relaxing.

They try to diversify the leisure time of vacationers. On the beaches you can not only sunbathe and swim, but also try your hand at kiting, diving or surfing.

You can also use the services of excursion centers that offer excursions:

  • to the fort buildings of Cabo de Rama;
  • to the protected areas of Cotigao;
  • to the old part of Goa;
  • to the local capital Panaji;
  • in Hapmi - a temple complex in ruins.

Advice. Families with children should not relax in the not very decent North Goa. Tourists in their reviews recommend choosing hotels with a huge territory, good animation and special meals in the southern part of the state.

Choosing a vacation spot in the south of the state

  1. Bogmalo. The area is surrounded by palm trees on all sides. Among the entertainment options, vacationers will definitely appreciate visiting local beach cafes, which serve the most delicious fish and seafood dishes, as well as diving classes at a local school.
  2. Colva is a beach that is very popular with locals. While it is deserted on weekdays, it is crowded on weekends. But by moving a little deeper into the beach, you can also find a quieter place.
  3. Palolem. An ideal place to relax with children. There is white sand, a gentle entrance to the water, and a beautiful plant environment. Children love to watch dolphins swim to the shore.
  4. There are many expensive hotels along the wide coastline of Mobor. The beach has yellow sand and entertainment provided by hotels.
  5. Benaulim is one of the most deserted beaches. Here, vacationers are offered to rent apartments in which they can stay for a long time. The main local entertainment is dolphins playing near the shore.
  6. Cavelossim is suitable for a very relaxing holiday for older people, conservative couples and those who want to relax in solitude from the world.

These are the main beaches in the south of the state. But not all. During your vacation, you can inexpensively rent a motor boat from local residents and go “reconnaissance” to choose the best place to relax.

Merry North

The motto of a holiday in North Goa is: “Down with conventions!” Let's have fun non-stop!” This is how you can briefly describe your vacation at this resort.

The hippie movement once settled here, so today the place has become popular among young people, adherents of informal movements, representatives of gay people and downshifters. This is exactly the place where ostentatious wealth and high status are not needed.

In view of such a diverse, detached public, expensive hotels are not held in high esteem here. Vacationers prefer to stay in hostels, small guesthouses and rent rooms in the private sector.

Baga is a real paradise for divers

In the evening, fun entertainment awaits you literally on every corner - noisy parties, competitions, local discos. Bars and cafes near the beach are open 24 hours a day.

Attention! Almost every day, various youth festivals are held in North Goa, where participants compete for the most impressive outfit.

Logically, the beach line in the state should not differ radically by region. But this is not the case in Goa. Due to the huge number of informal holidaymakers, the beaches are dirty. In addition, here you can come face to face with sacred animals - cows, which frivolously wander among the beachgoers.

Relaxing in the north

The beaches of North Goa also vary:

  1. Vagator is a beach where lovers of Goan trance prefer to relax. Illegal parties are often held here.
  2. Mandrem and Aguada are the quietest places that are best chosen by families with children as a holiday destination.
  3. Arambol. Tourists who have been to Goa several times recommend relaxing on this beach. It is the cleanest with gray sand and relatively calm. A yoga center offers its services here. You can stay in numerous bungalows and guesthouses.
  4. Morjim Russian Beach is a great place for water sports. Local residents called him “Russian” through a large number of our compatriots.
  5. The bag is chosen by divers. Only here you can go ten meters underwater and admire the unique beauty of the underwater world. Local diving sets are the best in India.
  6. Calangute is a lively beach with a variety of attractions, supermarkets, clothing stores and food establishments. This beach is characterized by a large number of locals who try to sell all sorts of trinkets to tourists.

Young people are better off vacationing in the northern part of the state. Southern hotels will be very boring for active and cheerful people. Moreover, at this age they do not pay attention to shortcomings in the form of garbage near their feet or drunk beachgoers. The most important thing is to have fun.

To summarize, we can say that clean beaches and comfortable rooms can only be found in South Goa. As well as a calm atmosphere. For entertainment and fun nightlife you need to go north.
